1340 WJMB - Brookhaven

Is there anyone out there that can give me the history on WJMB / Brookhaven and what finally did them in ..? I believe they were at 1340 on the dial .

They were done in by their transmitter location that was wanted by Walgreens, I believe, and the station owner did not find a suitable new site...this is my recollection, but I believe to be correct. Thanks

I do not know alot about the history of the station or about it's downfall . However, I can tell you that it was at 1340 on the dial . They played soft pop music . The station was located at the intersection of Hwy 51 and Brookway Blvd . I once did a St. Jude radio-thon there with a lady deejay named Sharon Hyatt . It was a great little station , they were 1000 watts daytime and I think it cut to 250 watts at night .

WJMB shut down when Aubrey Felder passed away. He had moved the transmitter site from the original location to a cow pasture just north of downtown. You could see the tower from I-55 as you were going thru Brookhaven. The studio was moved to a small room next to the Radio Shack in Brookhaven that Aubrey operated. Once Aubrey passed, the station pretty much shut down and the license was deleted.

I can remember going in the original studio / transmitter location off Brookway Blvd. around 1989 I think. Wasn't long after that they moved and the original tower and building was dismantled.

i remember it had a mor format in the mid 80s. i also remember when it was one of two music stations most people listened too. 1250 whny mccomb and 1350 wjmb. especially where i lived. dead square in the middle of the two. i believe it went dark in 1990. i lived in brrokhaven in late 92 and it was dark then for sure. in 94 so was whny

Heh... good ole Charlie Holt's station. Many a story could be told about WHNY. I'm amazed the center tower hasn't washed into the creek yet!

hey can you tell me if he ever turned on the lights on those things? he ticked me off in 92 and i reported him :) i think it took the fcc about 7 years to even check it out :) last time i drove thru mccomb it was not on the air again.
one day he switched the format from oldies/classic rock to mor ala 1950s-early 60s. a friend of mine was still working their that day and we came up with 2 liners..leave off the n and youve got why? why are we on the air..1250 whny..
last in the ratings..1250 whny...oh wait there were 3. mccombs worst station..1250 whny.. he said all 3 on the air several times. no one called..and he wasnt fired..so even the station manager wasnt listning.. ;D

I know the lights weren't on the last time I went by there. Transmitter wasn't on the air either. It's kinda hit and miss nowadays.
