WGJK AM 1360 is back on the air today after an extended "sleep" with all Christmas music. According to Rome's Hometown Headlines, the format will change to Adult Standards after the holidays.
The station has been dark for many months as Southern Broadcasting regained ownership of the frequency. The station was sold two years ago to a fomer Southern employee who was unable to stay on the air using a Mexican format. The station went dark and Southern finally got the channel back.
1360 began in the early 1960's as WIYN. It was placed on the air by Les Graddick who sold it, along with WTSH 107.1, to Southern in the late 1980s.
WIYN programmed a variety format with some local talk during it's heyday. Southern tried several formats before selling the 500 watt station two years ago.
The Adult Standards format has been popular in Rome in the past as heritage station WRGA utilized the format until Mcdouglad Broadcasting bought the station in 1978 and changed the format to country. The country format gave way to news/talk a decade later as country listeners had migrated to FM mostly.
