1370 KREL BEFORE 1964

Hey Guys:

Would anybody know the format history of 1370 before it became Top 40 KREL in 1964? The only thing I do know it it was called KBUC from 1948 to 1964.

Thanks

According to the June 1, 1959 issue of Billboard, KBUC had just flipped from Spanish to English-language pop singles. It was The Real Don Steele's first radio station in 1960...straight out of broadcast school. A brief aircheck is included in The Real Don Steele Remembered on Reelradio. Sounded like a conservative Top 40 or a liberal MOR.

There are mentions of KBUC in Billboard all the way back to 1948. It would appear to have been block-programmed...some DJs playing country, some playing easy listening.

I remember it was country for a while in 62 or 63 with PD T.Texas "Tiny", a really big guy who had been a jock on 1390 KGER when it was country in the late 1940's and '50's. He had rememained at KGER thru 1961 doing his late night show on a remote from a drive-in restaurant in Long Beach on PCH. Of course KGER went all religion. KREL was initially all religion on 1370 for a couple of years then went to an AC format under GM Paul Crouch prior to his position as head of TBN.

Hey Jon:

Thanks for that info!! I need to put that in my notes.

Could you tell me when did KGER go religion? How long was KGER Country? This is something I did not know. Thanks!!

You said "KREL was initially all religion on 1370 for a couple of years then went to an AC format".
I just need to know what year KREL was religous and what year it was AC.

Thanks again Jon.
