1390 in Charleston flips again

WSPO 1390 in Charleston has flipped, again. Now, they have split off from their 99.3 translator, a Spanish station (which is simulcast on one of Apex's HD FM signals) to run a TOURIST INFO format.

Yes, tourist information on probably the second best AM signal in Charleston. They basically don't have to do any work except putting a CD in.

The Charleston Visitors Center now has the station. This happened a day or two ago because I heard it last night.

It is on about a 15-20 minute loop. They put a lot of work into it because it has voiceovers from most of the major attractions in town and from some of the local mayors.

This is their 4th format change in 3 years. They were soul oldies for a few months, then went to sports, then Spanish, and now this format.

What a waste.

Charleston needs standards. Alice and Way-FM are too close to the nearest standards station.

Unless the one in Hilton Head reaches that far.

Myrtle Beach had one of these but it was off the air two weeks ago.

It is. You have one of the most historic AMs in SC basically reduced to a CD that replays every 20 minutes. I could think of four or five good formats that would be better.

Apex basically has used it as a throwaway station. They had something with the oldies for a few months and the beginnings of the sports format, then they gutted it. After the first year or so, they spent almost no money on it.

Standards would be good. Heck, even a 50s/60s oldies format like the old 980 AM or the old gospel format (like Citadel had) would do. Heck, five years ago one book they had a 4 share with gospel!

They could have done classic country to counter 92.5 (they already have the CDs).

It's silent but not available

Is the owner going to do something with it soon? If not, I bet you it might not be on the market, but anything is available for the right price.

I mean, there's gotta be a good reason why the owner didn't just turn in the license.

And on 1390...the only way I can imagine this actually coming into fruition as anything beyond a placeholder format until sports or something returns is either the Chamber of Commerce or the city paying more than what the station bills as monthly "rent" (I can't imagine its too much) or some sort of favorable tax status in return for the format.
