1390 in Charleston flips to sports

At the stroke of midnight last night, WXTC (1390) in Charleston, SC, switched from classic soul (their format for the last six months) to sports talk. They are running sports from the Sporting News network, as overnight, they were running Todd Wright's show. They also switched on their 250-watt translator, W255BW (99.3), strong enough to bring a signal throughout most of the immediate Charleston area.

WSPO will have a local morning show with Tony D and Jennifer Burns (from 6-9am), then Dan Patrick (from 9am-12pm), Tim Brando (from 12-3pm), followed by another local show called Southern Sports Now with Seth Harp, Jonas Mount, and Nick Case (3-6pm). They will also have local updates throughout the day. The rest of the programming will come from Sporting News Radio.

In the 1990s, the 1390 frequency ran sports for a few years, so sports will come back to the original frequency it was on in the Lowcountry.

They plan to run live shows from both ACC and SEC media days, and will also grab some local sports rights. They will compete with WTMZ (910) and WQNT (1450) for sports around the Charleston area.

There is a link about Seth Harp's credentials, as he was a sports talk host in Kalamazoo, Huntsville, and Lincoln. Harp joined the station in March, so they have been preparing for the sports talk format for months now.

Their signal is pretty good, as the 99.3 signal goes almost to Folly clear. Since it was the first day, they had very few, if any, calls, but as the word of the station grows, they will get more.

Here is the link about Seth Harp.

WSPO has gained some listeners, as they had their first calls at the end of last week.

The station also has their own Facebook and Twitter pages, and all of their personalities do blogs every day of the week. WSPO will carry an SEC Game of the Week every week during the football season, with the first game being Georgia at Oklahoma State on Sept. 3.

The station will also pick up NFL tripleheaders from Westwood One, including Sunday night football, and they will also carry Monday Night Football.

I was excited about a new sports FM, but the signal is absolutely terrible. Good thing they're on AM too, I guess. I've given it a real chance, but the morning show isn't nearly as good as Czaban or Mike and Mike and the afternoon guys aren't entertaining at all. This may not last...

WSPO is only on that 250-watt translator at 99.3, so it only covers the area within about 10-12 miles of the transmitter in West Ashley. Before 95.9 switched to oldies, they were planning to put the sports on that big 95.9 signal, and they would have had more publicity then.

They haven't even done any promotions in the community yet, so I guess they're waiting until it gets closer to football season to promote.

In yesterday's newspaper, they finally put an article about WSPO, even though the station has been on the air since June 19. They had an interview with Seth Harp, the program director and the host of "Southern Sports Now."

The article had several typos in it, including WSPO being on 1340 AM, when it is actually 1390, and WTMZ at 940 AM, instead of 910. It also talked about their double dose of local hosts.

Here is the article, from Charleston.net:

This is probably a bad place to ask this, but the two subjects are related and I didn't figure it was worth posting a new thread about....does FM95.9 have a website yet? Apex hasn't updated their corporate one.

WSPO is getting that House Divided show from WQNT, which only had it a few weeks before they dropped it. It will be on from 9-11am. They will also have the Sertoma Football Classic next Thurs/Fri. and that college football package.

Here's their Twitter page:

The House Divided... *shudders*

That is just bad radio. It was bad when it was conceived a few years ago and it hasn't changed at all. Change of frequency aside, it's only going to be more of a hindrance than a help.
