1390 on FM?

Holy Moses what's going on there? This week Bill and I were driving once again back thru Cicero on Route 11. We were listening to FM for awhile and heard 1390 Oldies on 97.3 on FM! Then it was some guy laughing and more of 1390. It was in stereo because the light was on that says ((S)) on the readout screen on the little rented van we were driving. What is that? Are they going to FM on that? Because some of that music doesn't sound all that hot on FM radio ya know? Especially Pretty Little Angel Eyes. That one sounds all fuzzy and stuff.

We are leaving for New Mexico tomorrow and tonight we are in Lakawanna, NY there are not a lot of very nice people here, and this motel is terrible and there's no oldies here. We have a big deisel RV that we picked up in Jamestown and we need to deliver to Alamagordo. My God is it ever expesnive to drive this heap. The rich guy who owns it doesn't care about anything I guess. Deseil fuel is over 4 bucks a throw and on the thruway it was like 4.45 a gallon. Holy crap anyways. This big bus gets like 3 miles to a gallon. Bill says it will cost us almost 5 thousand dollars to drive it to New Mexico. Jeesh that's a lot, and this guy doesn't have any cool movies on his DVD player. So there's nothing to do here. But 97.3 is sure where we heard it. Is this a trannsponder or somethig?

thank you

howard

Hmm. If this was on 97.3 as you say, it sounds like you may have discovered a pirate.

The only "legal" 97.3 in the region I can think of would be WYXL out of Ithaca, an AC station owned by Saga. There's no reason they'd be simulcasting an oldies station owned by another company.

And it couldn't have been one of those portable FM transmitters people use to hear their MP3 player in the car. First of all, what's the point? Second, those devices have a very small range. It would be nearly impossible to hear it for as long as you did (from your description, I have the impression you had it tuned in for several minutes).

As far as the "Stereo" indicator lighting up on your radio... that only means the FM signal was in stereo, regardless of whether the source audio being fed into the transmitter was actually in stereo.

Hello Bob thank you. Bill said it might be an MP3 thingy that they use for putting in to your car radio, but why the heck would anyone do that? I know there are some of those MP3 players that have radios, but do they have AM? And why would anyone tune in 1390 to replay it on thier car radio on 97.3? Maybe they thought it would make the music stereo huh? Well we heard this station on FM for about 5 miles I guess. We went all the way to Liverpool and got on the truway there, it was pretty strong. I told Bill he was an idiot. Then it faded out. Country music for a few miles, then nothing.

1390 sounds okay I guess. But we heard a lot of the same songs on our last ride thru "CUES" that's what we have been calling that town. "CUES" Should be a big billiard table company there or something. My Mom had Syracuse China, and I took a picture of that building once a lot of years ago. I don't remember weather it's still there or not. But let me tell you she loved those dishes all right. My dad accidently drove over one of the turkey platters with his Ford Falcon. He was using it to drain oil out of the car, and forgot it was under there, and drove right over it. My gosh was mom mad as a hornet. Dad and her didn't talk to each other for months.

Hey we are in a Super Suites in Paris Kentucky tonight. It is the only place that had enough space for this deisel drinker we're driving. We put 400 dollars in it every 150 miles today. And let me tell you even the truck stops make you reset the pump every 75 dollars worth. Like we are gonna run off or something with this pig. Its called a Rambler or something. I remember Rambler made a pretty crappy car in the 60's. Must be the same company. This thing is slow, noisy, uncomfortable and big BIG! People keep giving Bill and I the finger. He drew a sign that says "Scr*w You People" I told him to stop that stuff, and just drive. He get kinda angry

Bill stopped into a WalMart this afternoon and we picked up a stack of oldies CDs so we're okay. And I got a nut-log at Stuckeys.

Thank you again Bob for responding to this question. It must be a pirate okay. Just dont get why a pirate would play 1390.

thank you

I don't know of any translators on that freq in that area, but the FCC is authorizing (via STA's) AM stations to rebroadcast on FM translators. Maybe that's it? :-\

WFBL is NOT broadcasting on 97.3 -unless it is a low powered pirate. The consensus around 1390 is that you have been on the road too long.
