1400 K-SHOP

KSHP has started running talk shows from the Salem network. Last night I heard Dennis Prager. Today they are airing Michael Medved. It sounds like these syndicated conservative talk shows have replaced the sports talk from a fourth tier network they used to run during non-shopping/non-brokered hours.

Of course these SRN shows also run on 1280 KDOX..In fact I am hearing these shows at the same time on both stations. Don't syndicated talk shows require market exclusitivty? Or do these lower tier talk shows not care, or even welcome, when multiple stations per market air their programs?

Not familiar with KSHPs or KDOXs nighttime patterns, but is it possible 1280 is buying time on 1400 for signal constraints?

I don't know why they are doing this but the nightime is an issue for both 1280 and 1400.

KDOX covers the entire market during the day at 5,000 watts.

But at night since they are class D they are down to 28 watts.

The transmitter is in Henderson so they don't cover Vegas that well at night.

Even parts of Henderson can't get 1280 at night.

The 1400 transmitter is in Vegas, and is 1,000 watts, so there would be "theoretically" no issue with market exclusivity, "theoretically."

1280 has a CP to move its transmitter to Las Vegas and go directional.

Diversity in programming, however, is another issue somewhat related to these simulcasts. Why not offer some progressive programs like Ed Schultz and Colmes.

I mean, I'm listening to Big Ed out of L.A. tonight on the 48,000 watts of AM 1150.

I wonder if it was a technical glitch on KSHPs part? Maybe they had the wrong sattelite channel dialed up? If I hear Michael Medved for a full hour again today, I'll assume they made some changes. If not, it was probably just an error.

KSHP seems to specialize in technical glitches...

A few years ago, I remember hearing KSHP switch from Fox sports at 11pm to some crackpot network. At midnight it was supposed to go back to Fox, but instead went to dead air, probably for the rest of the night.

The next night, the same thing happened... but they apparently had switched in a fail-safe... when it didn't go back to Fox at midnight, it went to PSAs... about 6 minutes worth of PSAs over and over.

I remember when KSHP first started... they just plugged into the "Talk America" network when they weren't running their shopping shows. No automation, apparently just a cart machine with a legal ID that ran at the top of the hour.

Actually both 1280 and 1400 are located on the same single stick on Martin LUther King Blvd in NLV. They are adjacent to the new Lotus 1100 station. I spent two nights last week putting a filter/detuning network on their tower to cut out pattern distortion on our new 1100 AM. Remember that a station does not necessariloy have to be in the town where it is licenced aslong as it gets significant signal into that town. Rules vary a bit.

Bill: When did 1280 move from Henderson to Las Vegas? Where is the old 1280 tower or did you use one of the KDWN towers?

Tom, The transmitter move was made a couple of years ago when they lost their lease in Henderson. They are Duplexed on the KSHP tower, but I beleive that they are still licensed to Henderson, even though they are several mles away. I think the old 1280 tower was torn down. As far as I know the KDWN towers never had anything to do with this move. The Lotus towers are used but were purchased after being taken down in California several years ago. They were fully inspected, new base sections purchased and are in first class condition saving us a hundred thousand dollars or so on the four 215 foot towers.

Since KDOX is a class D AM station, they aren't required to put a city-grade signal over their city of license at night. That's how they were able to move the transmitter from Henderson. They're still required to put a city grade signal over Henderson during the daytime, which they can from the LV location.

Moving to the KSHP tower lets KDOX put their little night signal more in the middle of the market, but even then their night signal is pretty weak. As Tom mentioned, they would need to go directional to raise their night power.

As Jay F has mentioned in the past, it would probably make more sense for KDOX to simulecast their FM station to help fill in the holes of KJUL's coverage.
