1410 WPOP Talk Schedule

I checked out the WPOP schedule on its website. WPOP is owned by iHeart Radio.

6-10am...Vinnie Penn Project (Local news-talk show)
10-Noon...Financial Exchange (Not sure if this is a paid money show)
Noon-3pm...Bloomberg Radio
3-6pm...Howie Carr (Syndicated from WRKO Boston)
6-9pm...Mark Levin (Syndicated by Cumulus/Westwood One)
9pm-12am...America Now with Megan McCain (Syndicated by iHeart/Premiere)
12-6am...Fox Sports (Syndicated by Premiere)

I don't understand why only one iHeart/Premiere Talk show is on WPOP's schedule, Megan McCain at 9pm. That's it. OK, WPOP can't air Rush or Coast to Coast because WTIC has those programs. But why no Sean Hannity, no Glenn Beck, no Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis or any other syndicated program that iHeart either owns or controls? You'd think iHeart would want to clear all its own shows, before running outside syndicated programs?

And if you call yourself NewsRadio, I suppose you want to talk about the news. So why in the middle of the day is WPOP running five hours of financial shows? And why overnight would they carry six hours of Fox Sports? (Yes I know Fox Sports used to run around the clock on this station but that was before they decided to change its identity.)

I suppose the whole reason for the switch was because Howie Carr is so popular around New England, with his Bawstin accent. iHeart Connecticut probably figured airing him on 1410 and building a new station around him might generate some interest that Fox Sports didn't. But why go only halfway in starting a full time Talk station, and air so few iHeart programs?

I find financial shows very boring, including Dave Ramsey. Instant tuneout. Maybe it's just me. They must be successful. I would imagine that's why there are sno many of them. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between paid programming and the regular programs. I would tune out WPOP after 10 and return at 3. I guess The Financial Exchange must be making money for WRKO. To me, it's a screeching halt to the flow of programming on WPOP and WRKO.

And once baseball season starts up again, the Eastern League's Hartford Yard Goats (ex-New Britain Rock Cats) will be pre-empting Levin and the first hour of McCain most nights.

It's a half-assed attempt at talk radio in a market in which the only valuable national properties are tied up longterm at another station. Carr is a non-entity in much of Connecticut, and much of the state tends to align itself with New York rather than Boston. iHeart doesn't want to sell the station (at least not yet) and isn't about to pull the plug and turn in the license, so this no-effort format at least keeps the transmitter warm and makes money from advertisers who think people are actually listening because the syndicators have told them so.

Hannity is on WTIC 10PM-1AM. Glenn Beck isn't a Premiere show any more. He's on his own network called "The Blaze." They clear some of Premiere's weekend talkers including At Home with Gary Sullivan, The Jesus Christ Show, and Leo Leporte the Tech Guy

And if you call yourself NewsRadio, I suppose you want to talk about the news.

The vast majority of I-Heart's talk stations are called "NewsRadio." WELI is NewsRadio 960, WHYN is NewsRadio 560, WGY is NewsRadio 810 & 103.1, WTAG is NewsRadio 580 & 94.9, and WHJJ is NewsRadio 920. The only I-Heart talkers in this area that aren't called NewsRadio are WKOX in Boston which is Talk 1430 and WOR 710 in NYC.

By the way, the morning show "The Vinnie Penn Project" is supplied by co-owned WELI 960 New Haven. I assume whatever news and traffic WPOP does are supplied by iHeart's "Total Traffic." So there really is NO expenditure on this station, other than maybe giving Penn a few extra bucks for the simulcast.

I heard some of the show while driving through Hartford the other morning, which is how I realized it really is New Haven-based. And for an AM show, it really sounds like an FM Rock morning show, but just with no music. The whole time I listened, it was Penn discussing whatever was on his mind with his producer. No interviews with congressmen or mayors or other news makers. I didn't listen long but that was my impression. So even on a station that calls itself "News Radio," the host is just talking about what he had for lunch yesterday, or what he saw on TV last night.

So, in theory, WPOP's morning show is voice tracked from one of their sister stations. So much for being a locally based show!

What about WDRC-FM 102.9? They're simulcasting a morning show coming from a studio in Milford, airing alongside New Haven and Norwalk?
