1430 AM KZQZ Oldies

Anyone listen to WIL AM's replacement? Comments? Can oldies work on AM?

Because Bonneville wouldn't let them! Bonneville is keeping the WIL calls on 92.3, and they required the new owner to change them. It is kinda funny, however, that KZQZ are also ex-Bonneville calls (95.7 in San Francisco had them about 10 years ago).

1430 was Oldies about four years ago when still under the WRTH Calls as "Real Oldies 1430," before switching back to Standards, then to Country Classics as WIL-AM once again.

The playlist is pretty large, but they are playing a lot of obscure songs - if you want to see what they are playing, go to Yes.com, and look under WIL-AM. They are playing several poor re-recordings of songs, and it sounds pretty small market.

The owner of the station is Bob Romanik, a former Police Cheif of Washington Park, IL, and current owner of the Hollywood topless club also in Washington Park.

Studios are in a retail strip mall in Belleville, IL, shared with sister station 1510 AM WXOZ/Highland.

The Oldies format being heard on 1430 now, is the format from 1510, and 1510 has flipped to Classic Country as "Cool Country." WXOZ has an application to upgrade power to 5kW, which would cover the entire metro area, but still as a daytime only operation.

People are speculating Scott Shannon's "True Oldies" will soon be playing on this station. Wonder how true this rumor is?

1430 will be going live with a full airstaff starting April 1. No Scott Shannon. They have hired market veteran Terry Fox to do their production, so things are already starting to sound quite a bit better over there. It looks like Mr. Romanik is going to do it right. The music has already started improving, although they play too much 50s/Doo Wop stuff for my oldies tastes.

This is their new http://www.kzqz1430am.com/ website.

This site says that their programming consists of Oldies and Talk.
What times do their syndicated and local talk talk shows run??

Also, Dose any one know if they will be streaming any time soon?
I sure would like to listen to them here in Central Ohio.

As I understand, the only talk on the station is to be a 1 hour program hosted by Romanik, daily at 11AM...I don't know if he is going to start this on the 1st or not. He has been talking about doing this show since buying 1510 AM in Highland a couple of years ago, but to my knowledge, hasn't as of yet.

I think 1510 AM did air G. Gordon Liddy for a time - don't know if he is on slate for 1430 or not.

your right, they should have kept WIL 1430, I would really like for them to stream. Sounds like their going to be a good station with live DJ'S

Bonneville wouldn't let them have the WIL calls. There is WIL FM, and having two stations even though AM and FM, could cause some reporting problems with Arbitron. If the same company owns both, it's not as damaging, as at least they are getting some of the credit on their other property, but having an outside company competing with such a well known set of calls certainly could cause some confusion, and loss of credit regarding number of listeners. KZQZ is a cool set of call letters though, especially for an oldies station. Lots can be done with them, and they were last used in San Franciso. Not too shabby a grab.

Listening for about two weeks. A great song selection...however...playing CNN news clips needs work. The clip heard at 8am is played ALL DAY LONG. Old news isn't news. Also, they keep promoting The Grimm Reaper, station owner Bob Romanack, who never comes on. They keep giving lame excuses for his absence. Don't promote if you can't provide. It's radio 101. All that aside, it's about

looks like you got interupted mid sentence. I'm curious what your thought was that didn't get expressed. Is it better than Scott Shannon's True Oldies? And are you saying they run the exact same five minute newscast that was recorded in early morning ALL day long? Why, can't they just record a new one every hour or so? Doesn't the news change between eight am and the rest of the day? Seems a silly thing to do, if I read you right. You say the music is OK, how about DJ's? What about traffic, and local news? Anything goin' on that way?Jingles? Is it fun to listen to, or bland like most oldies stations on a low budget?

The DJs sound very good; Terry "Foxman" Fox is the station's GM & Morning Show host. He has been at a variety of stations around town for the last 30 years or so. Musically, it is one of the broadest mixes of Oldies I have ever heard - a huge playlist. Jingles and imaging are very 60s sounding. Very similar to Cincinnati's WDJO, but a bit broader musically.

I think it is a bit strange to use the positioner "Hot Talk - Cool Oldies," when the only talk show on the station is a 1 hour program hosted every once in awhile by the owner. It would seem more correct that if they do include Talk in the station's positioner for it to be the other way around - Cool Oldies - Hot Talk, since there is only 1 hour per day of Talk programming, and 23 of Oldies.

No local news or traffic as of yet...

Thanks for the update, mbatchelor.....there are those in the industry keeping an eye on this particular station for some reason. There is something of a national buzz going on, and it's a shame they are not streaming. Corporate biggies are monitoring from what I hear. Wonder what it's all about?

I hearthe ads and see the website logo about 1ST AMMENDMENT HOT TALK but there is no HOT TALK JUST,a lot of old music, "WHERE'S THE TALK" ?

::)
Finally..... I found "the old WIL" last week and love it. I'm a 25 year Radio guy, having started here in St. Louis, then moved around the country. I've done just about everything, including Sales Management, GM, Creative Director... trash man,... you name it. So COOL to have a TRUE Oldies station back.

One question???? How can I contact KZQZ 1430? I've listened to the call sign on (or near) the hour, plus, of course, through out the day, but I've never heard a phone number to call. I tried 411 and used St. Louis, but no listing. The web site is just a one page logo. I found this site through Google. Now I understand the station is actually in Belleville. I'd love to contact Bob and find out more.

Thanks for the help.

Michael
