1450 Question

An extension for the silent STA was filed back in May. I'm hearing rumblings that Cumulus has a buyer on the hook.
Has another silent STA been filed? If so, how can they do that after only being back on for 3 days?

And everytime a proposal is made before the FCC to tighten up the rules on dark stations and over-generous time limits on STAs, the NAB, other trade groups and the big station chains pitch a lobbying fit to scuttle the changes!

I note that WQKC (AM), 1450 kHz has been testing since yesterday with music and silent carrier only...looked at the FCC Online Daily Digests for the past few days and see no activity. Anybody know what's up?

I'm hearing a sports format from Dugan Ryan.

Are you serious? A 3rd sports station in this market without any pro teams?!

Some sports format is on now.

It's YAHOO! Sports Radio...a network whose lineage runs back to the old Sporting News Radio and, even further, back to One-On-One Sports. I don't thing bringing a third sports radio station into the Louisville market is a good idea at all. WHBE and WKRD cover every aspect of sports thoroughly through their local shows and their networks, ESPN and Fox respectively.

I still believe the Business with Adult Standards music idea previously discussed for WQKC-1450 would be the way to go (e.g. Bloomberg Business Radio with "Timeless Cool" standards, either hard drive or satellite versions). The fast-growing audience numbers in the older demos have nothing except perhaps WFPL in the market...somebody better begin to serve them!

I tuned in around 11AM and heard The Dan Patrick Show from Fox Sports Radio. I remember that Dan was on 1450 before they went dark. There was not a station ID at the top of the hour. It was strange to hear the FSR top of the hour updates and promos since FSR is on 790 and 101.7!

I've monitored the new WQKC for a couple of weeks now. Their signal and processing are very good...sounds like an Omnia AM processor to me. But they've got to get their automation to hit with the legal ID YAHOO! Sports gives them at :59:50 every hour...they've missed every one I've heard.

And with the expectation of having the big black FCC truck up on the Knobs sometime soon (now that they've found fertile fishing 'round these parts with WMMG), everybody better get their house in order! Wait, my phone's ringing... ;D

I believe you're right about the Omnia along with a new BE 1KW that replaced the MW1A around the time that Cumulus took over "operating" the station a couple years ago.

uuugh. I'd rather have the MW1 back. Why someone wants to put a piece of crap transmitter behind a perfectly good processor is beyond me.

After sitting in that building soldering new transistors into those power modules every few months, trust me when I tell you that you wouldn't want that MW1A back. I don't know if they all ate solid state devices like that one did, but unless you're looking for job security, that thing had no redeeming value.

Hahaha! Tell us what you really think!

MW-1's were great thirty or more years ago!! not as reliable as the old Gates they replaced but much easier on the power bill. Over 20 or more years in service, many paid for themselves multiple times with power savings in high electric rate areas. If the station bought a couple of extra power mods the typical 5AM call that "the transmitter would not come on" or "the directional pattern was messed up" fix was easier and faster than changing a tube. I have seen a couple that "limped" along with multiple power mods out. I agree if your tower is not well grounded or ac power surge and lighting protected, stick with an old tube unit.

Anytime I tune in, I never hear an ID at the top of the hour. Are the call letters still WQKC ?

When did you get to work with the old MW1a at WXVW Bob? I put many a transistor into that thing myself over the years CJ ran the station. It became a weekly ritual to open the door, see a #47 bulb lit, cuss, switch out this weeks failed module for the one you fixed last week and then start the process again. What really made it bad is since it was only putting out 768 watts you would figure it wouldn't be under any strain at all. (the tower was/is too tall after it was fixed from the vandals falling it, so 1000 ERP was 768 out).

I always though the MW1A sounded muddy too. It just never had a crisp sound to it; no matter what you put into it. It was fine for one-on-one sports, and all the talk, high school games, and the reds; but stardust, music of your life, kool gold and pure gold (wow, 5 formats while I was there, how many does that make for the big X over time?) never gave the music what it should have.

To switch back to the original post, While I'm glad to hear 1450 isn't dead, bringing it back on just to reset the clock shouldn't count. It has been one year with no extension filed, let it return back and start the app process over for it. But, who in their right mind wants a class 4 AM (even at 1000 ERP day/night non-directional)? Sure We'd all love to have one, but could you make it profit?
