1460 WXBR For Sale

It seems like BTR communications isn't really in a rush to unload this station but I wouldn't put is past them to lower the price a bit. It's been for sale for a while now. The city of Brockton wants to try and turn a bunch of the buildings on main st into condo's.

The listing says that engineers have told management that WXBR-1460 can be upgraded to 10 to 20 kw days...... with WAZN-1470 in Belmont and WNBP-1450 Newburyport in the way? That claimed upgrade must require mucho towers for 1460! ---more than what local NIMBY's would likely allow.

I like the part about the possibility of upgrading the daytime signal to up to 20K. Yeah, sure. WAZN won't mind. Or WNBP either.

I guess the Jibguy and I had the same thought at the same time...and we both live in Essex County!

Not any more.... Jibguy lives in Sagadahoc County, 500 feet from the Mighty 730.

Look out...a 50K 750 may be coming your way up theah. Oh well, you lived with a 1K 750 in Portsmouth, NH one click away from WJIB.

Hey...what's with the 'QUOTE' function? It inserts your reply in small print inside a box instead of a regular 'REPLY.

You have to make sure that your reply text is outside of any quote brackets when you type it.

Actually, I didn't live with 750-Portsmouth. It was gone before 1991, when I bought 740. Had I known what the 750-owners were going to do (turn in license), I would have tried to buy it. It's my kind of station... a lowly AM daytimer. - As to 750 near Bangor..... not a concern, for several reasons.

"No real estate". That means when the landlord decides to sell the transmitter site, you're off the air.

and they may suspect the transmitter site is in play and are making a run for the exits while it is still worth something, not that it is worth anything without RE or a 99 year lease on the transmitter site.

I think I can say that (we at) 1470 would not be happy and would object.

WAZN could become much more of a significant player in the Boston market by moving its daytime operations to a separate site--the WEZE site at Wellington Circle. With its daytime transmitter at the WEZE site, WAZN could increase its day power at least ten-fold. Put three towers, equally spaced, along the line joining the two existing towers and WAZN could have a pattern very similar to WAMG's five tower in-line day pattern, except, instead of having its main lobe to the east as WAMG does, WAZN would have its main lobe to the west, with a significant, but smaller lobe to the east. The pattern could be narrow enough to not encroach on WXBR or WSAR--even if WSAR is granted the CP it has applied for to increase to 25 kW-D. That upgrade would actually be beneficial to WAZN; despite the power increase, it decreases radiation to the north (apparently specifically to increase protection of WAZN).

MRBI has spent a fortune improving the facilities of its AMs in other markets, especially Los Angeles/Orange County and New York. Since WAZN is not now a major biller, doing this upgrade, which would cost well north of $1 million, would be something of an act of faith, but if the changes around LA have proven financially worthwhile, this one could do so also.

WAZN

WAZN will not be moving operations anywhere. We are firmly
entrenched in our current location, thank you. Such a move
would, in no way, be cost-effective...

Well, I hope that WXBR will stay & not be sacrificed for some other rimshot to become a "Boston" station, like what happened to WPEP.

While WXBR's 5 kW ND day signal might make it into Boston-and it was easily heard in RI in its WBET days with 1450 W. Warwick off-the 1 kW DA-N I'm not so sure of. Looks as if all the power goes due east.

If it were nondirectional, it might be worth taking a chance. You can always get back on the air with one of those Valcom whips. But I don't think those are allowed in directional arrays, and even a two-tower array needs quite a bit more land than a single tower.

Valcom whips? Sounds kind of kinky!

I know of 2 stations using the Valcom: Alex Langer's WFYL 1180 in King of Prussa, and WGCH 1490. WFYL gets out well considering the shortness of the whip(a 94-footer)at 1180. I've heard WGCH on my travels back to New England; it, too, seems to do well with its whip on 1490.
