1460 WXBR Update

Someone posted an update on 1460 WXBR on the inbrockton.com forums, and the future does not look good if what was posted here is accurate...

Check out the 5th post from the bottom on here: http://www.inbrockton.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11210&PN=2&TPN=5

Some key points...

New (used) TX delivered with nobody to accept it so it sat outside for a while (in a crate)

Moved inside the building but blocked in the old TX

Building so disgusting with rat droppings that nobody is willing to do the engineering work

Tower site lease price will not be easy to pay...

The state of radio in Brockton is quite sad right now...

Word is that WXBR is on the block, asking price $250K. Station has been dark since 8/3/12.

Since Alex Langer owns the other Brockton AM (1410), you'd think he would have been the first person to be contacted by WXBR's present owners. He could either have moved 1410 to 1460--a much better facility--and sold off 1410 or taken 1410 dark. Langer must have had his reasons for not grabbing WXBR. Maybe he is waiting for the price to come down further. I wonder how far he wants it to come down before he expresses interest.

I can't find the signal area maps of either 1410 or 1460 since they are off the air at the moment.

I could see Al Langer buying 1460 and maybe selling (or even donating) 1410 to Stonehill College (where it would become WSHL-AM and simulcast WSHL-FM) as I suspect the day and night signals are both strong in Easton. The 1410 AM signal would probably greatly expand WSHL's reach.

Another possible buyer for either 1410 or 1460 would be Ed Perry, for the purpose of simulcasting WATD-95.9.

It can't become WSHL-AM, only WSHL, as the F.C.C. doesn't issue -AM suffixes. Perry already owned WMSX once, hence why "WATD" is still legally WATD-FM. WMSX held the WATD callsign under his ownership which meant he had to either add the -FM suffix to Marshfield or change the call. When he sold it he never changed it back. Besides, WATD-FM doesn't need simulcasting & not on A.M..

I hope both stations stay in Brockton.

I've been relying on Ed Lozama on Twitter @edloz for updates on the status of WXBR. In his latest post, he claims that they have audio connection between studio-transmitter and the station's on the way back. And can someone clarify for me where this place called "Hoston" is? :-\

For those not familiar with the ownership, Azure Media is located in Miami and is owned by Johnson Napoleon, president of Azure College, a nursing school. This Ed Lozama is the group's VP/COO and a radio host. They run a couple of stations in Florida.

So apparently, WXBR will be back on the air soon. These owners just appear to be going at their own pace in doing so. And yes, it is long overdue.

Anyone who's working in that shack will HAVE to hold their breath...it's full of rat crap. None of the pictures show the transmitter turned ON, I notice....

I have no idea who/what/where "Hoston" is.

LOL, Hoston is right next to Boston, inhabited solely by people with incredibly fat fingers who keep hitting the "H" right next to the "B" on the keyboard.

I really don't think that listing is for WXBR. "Southern New England" (Mass, RI, Ct) is a big place with lots of little AM's.

According to a Globe story by Emily Sweeney and confirmed by reader comment by Ed Lozama, himself, they’ve already been on, testing.

Radio station to return to air
Ed Lozama comment said:
I am happy to report that we ran an air check on Saturday from 6:50 to 7:20. Everything went well and WXBR has never sounded better. We are now waiting on delivery of a remote unit to begin broadcast full time. It should be here by mid week. On behalf of Azure Media, I wish to thank the community for their patience. WXBR will be back bigger and stronger in the next few days.

Azure Media, LLC

According to the article, one of the problems they had was stolen copper plates

Jhonson Napoleon said:
At WXBR’s tower site in West Bridgewater, Napoleon said, company officials encountered something they were not prepared for: Approximately 100 feet of copper plates that ran between the tower and the transmitter went missing.
The copper “was all stolen,” said Napoleon. “We discovered this December when we installed the new transmitter. . . . It’s something you can’t run the radio station without.”

LOL!

I am very pleased that WXBR is finally back on the air. In its' heyday, 1460 (formerly WBET) was considered the "station of record" for Brockton, since 1946. Anything about Brockton, you would hear about on WBET/WXBR. I have many fond memories of my 9 year "tour of duty" at 1460 (1982-91). I am so glad that Azure Media/WXBR is making a concerted effort in bringing local radio back to "The City Of Champions". It was truly missed. I wish them the best of luck for them and the crew of WXBR. This IS very good news indeed for Brockton! :)
