Sacramento had a great Top 40 battle between KROY and KXOA back in the 60's. 1470 became KNDE in the early 70's but again reverted to the KXOA identity in the late 1970's after it was sold. 1470 these days is Radio Disney, but 147KXOA has returned as an Internet station.

The Giant X, 147 KXOA is a hybrid Oldies station - not a typical Oldies station, not a typical 60's/70's Classic Hits station. The slogan in "timeless Rock and Roll & Soul" without the MOR crossovers. Seems to be unlike anything else playing "Oldies". Large music library, DJs 24 hours a day, and some funny imaging.

I had it on... Cute...Generic liners...Sounds like a cute automated station. Interesting though, most of the music I heard this afternoon was from 1970-1980 with one or two exceptions.. Let's see what 1470 was doing then:

That overnight guy rubs me the wrong way. He looks like a child molester. It sounds like just another non -current hits semi oldie station. The evening guy sounds like a poor rendition of Wolfman jack.

In the 7-8AM hour this morning, 18 songs played, 10 were from the 60's, 6 from the 70's and 2 from the 80's...

I listened for about 35 minutes yesterday afternoon. Are you using some sort of music scheduler or are just playing a shuffled list?
 
Is this station actually based in Sacramento or is this a trend in branding legendary Top 40 call letters for Internet Radio. It seems to be the trend even in terrestrial just reliving the good old days of radio back in it's prime. KXOA is the first top 40 station in Sacramento back in 1956.

Michael, I guess it depends upon whether you consider MusicGen to really be a music scheduler..LOL

RCS originally told us that Music Gen only has one category...! We're using 14 different music categories. Some are 60's, some are 70's, one has 80's; Beatles and Rolling Stones rotate in their own categories. Should take a minimum of about 2 days for anything to repeat but I've heard songs play twice in 24 hours, and in some cases less than 12 hours.

Plus, we do at least 2-3 breaks per hour live from 6AM-2PM so in those hours some music shuffling is done.

The music is meant to be about a 50/50 mix of 1964-1969 and 1970's. The exceptions are some pre-1964 Motown and Chuck Berry, and a small number of 80's cuts (no techno pop). If it varies a lot from that, it's because of MusicGen, some on-the-fly tweaking during the day, or because most hours are over-programed on the music and some cuts are deleted.

OK - yeah - I admit it - I checked it out too. A couple of observations. First, I congratulate you for making the audio levels listenable & constant. That's not easy, and I heard no clipping while I was there. Second, given the benefit of history it's easy to say "yeah, Barry Manilow & Abba, bad - Rolling Stones, good". So you've put together something that's going to be good for aging baby boomers who were turned off by bubblegum. I happen to fit into that group, but I probably won't listen again. Why? Because I don't hear anything on this station that I haven't heard before & there's still much more new music that these aging ears want to enjoy. That's not possible with over-the-air radio, but it surely is on the web. So I find a better use for my broadband connection.

There's certainly a few folks who probably would appreciate this. I can see it as great background music in a breakfast diner where steak & eggs are popular. Or at a car show. The sfx and liners make it more than an oldies jukebox, and that sets you apart from lots, but not all, of these nostalgia web stations. Time will tell whether or not it catches on.

I was curious so I gave the Giant X a spin and found the music mix to somewhat refreshing.
I liked the afternoon guy Jeff Richards but is that Bob Oscar Johnson for real?
I like the old jingles too. I'll sample it again. I think it's worth a second look.
 
KFBK has a prominent mention of KXOA on their website at the moment...link on the home page under "what's happening" to the complete mention..
 
Little Oscar looks like he may have been slightly..... ummmm.... overserved.
 
Wow, KXOA posts a profit after only one month on the air.

That beats "That 70's Channel" by......well, about 12 years.

I guess it pays to be a "professional" station from the start!

Have you paid your internet royalty fees yet?

When is somebody going to exhume Color Radio 124, KROY from the radio cemetery and give it a jump start on-line. I can' wait to see the new wigs.
 
I've returned to KXOA for somemore sampling. The more I listen, the more I like it. The music is good, the sound is good too, plus no commericals!
You're not going to hear the same 250 songs over and over again.
I cruise the Internet a lot for music stations and this is definitely in my top 5.
I listen mostly in the daytime, not at night or early mornings. I can tell this is an evolutionary process. I'll continue to listen to see where they go from here.

Keep it Rockin' KOXA!

Maybe someone should bring back the Big 55, KAFY 550 Bakersfield!
