1480 AM WPFR Terre Haute

I've heard that Mid-West has purchased WPFR-AM from Paul Ford, and they plan to go news-talk. Perhaps that's why they are currently off the air. Has anyone heard anything? Thanks.

Haven't heard anything of this, but I think that would be a winning idea for TH.

I'm surprised that Indiana markets like Terre Haute and Lafayette don't have a news/talk station on the air.

Didn't 1480 WTHI pull in some pretty decent numbers during its day as a news/talk outlet?

Sounds like a format to try in the sea of country and classic rock stations down there.

I'm not sure about 1480's numbers when it was news-talk. I think that at the time WBOW 1230 am had Rush on in the afternoons and Bruce Williams evenings, local news-talk with Taylor Brown and Mark Edwards, before everyone was fired.
1480 was back on the air today with it's normal programing, so I'm wondering if any of the possible purchase rumors are true?? Too bad, Terre Haute needs a news-talk, sports format, rather than all sports.

1480's signal barely covers the city, so I'm not sure how it could be turned into a viable *anything*.

I worked at WBOW with Taylor Brown, Mark Edwards, and Dan Reynolds when the station was on 1230. We tried to straddle adult standards and N/T. It didn't work. People would tune in for net and local news, and then tune back to Magic 101 or Hi-99. We even tried moving the music into Magic 101 territory (w/o currents), which might have helped, except that the station's owner decided to fire the PD and put us back on adult standards.

I think that the old 640 frequency and its power allocation would make a viable signal for an N/T. But then the question is, what owner would do anything more than just slap satellite talk and news on the thing? Even when I left WBOW, it was getting hard to justify a news staff, which by the way had dwindled to two whole people when I left -- Taylor Brown and a 21-year-old college grad making so little money it was criminal.

That's the way Terre Haute radio has always been...that's its history...if you're not in sales you're not going to make enough money to pay your bills working at a Terre Haute radio station.

Mobilene, Do you have any air-checks from your days at WBOW that you would share? I thought that the local talk on WBOW with Taylor Brown, Mark Edwards, and Dan Reynolds was well done. It's sad that the days of local news-talk in the smaller markets, and inching toward the larger markets is disappearing.
1480 daytime singal does cover Terre Haute well @ 5kw. It's nighttime coverage is very poor. And is Taylor Brown now working in Vincennes for Mark Lang?

MightyFrenchman, I learned that about TH radio firsthand when Mark Savage, then PD at WZZQ, offered me the 7-mid weeknight shift at $11,000 per year. That was about 1992 or 1993. I made more than 3 times that at my "day job" and said no. I didn't mind making minimum wage to do my weekend shifts, but I wasn't counting on radio to pay the rent.

PTBoardOp94, the photo resembles Taylor Brown a great deal. Surprised to see he's still in the biz.

radio lover, I really enjoyed listening to the noontime open-phone program that Mark and Taylor did. It disappeared when Rush Limbaugh came to town. I have about 5-10 minutes of one or two music shift(s) I did in about 1990, and I have my jock open (voiced by Ray Otis but maddeningly distorted). That's all I have, and if you're interested, I'm happy to send this stuff to you as .mp3 files. Let me know how to contact you.

Taylor Brown is in Washington working for Dave Crooks. I don't know if he has worked for the Langes in the past - it wouldn't surprise me.

(EDIT: at one time, the Langes LMA'd WAMW - just not sure if it was before or after Brown joined the station)

mobilene, Yea that be great! You can contact me at 812-208-9577. Speaking of WBOW/WZZQ. Does anyone know what ever happened to former morning personality Terry Jacobs? Did'nt he get fired, then a few months later get rehired?

RadioLover, could you shoot me an e-mail address instead, one to which I can just send the mp3s? jim
