14GVL

"14GVL" as Chuck B. calls it.

What do you think now?

Tony

This is the lowest of the low in small market radio. There's nothing like hearing non original versions of hit songs by Little Richard or Martha And The Vandellas to name a few. Then there's the issue of playing out of phase stereo songs. I truly enjoyed hearing the instrumental version of Time Won't Let Me by the Outsiders. Then there's the issue of spliced up PAMS jingles that the station appropriated. This was common for many radio toilets in the 60s.
It's impressive that KGVL is keeping up the tradition of cheapness and schlock radio. Add in Chuck Brinkman and his non personality personality show and we have Ames, Iowa, radio circa 1965. Then there's the issue of audio processing. There isn't any. Let's keep in format. Chubby Checker said it best. "How low can you go?"

Radio Truth, you are far from the truth.
I think The Big 14GVL does pretty good with what limited funding it has.
They are really trying to do something on a signal that has been neglected for years in a market that has few local signals.
Sure their jingles could be better, And I'm sure they will improve as time goes on.
They play songs that no other station in the area does, and they play some pretty great Rock & Roll.

It looks like our radio truth has run out of original insults and has resorted to copy & pasting his old ones. From Nov. 24, 2010:http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=178941.msg1569674#msg1569674 "How lazy can you get?"

Separating the fakes from the reals is easy: If Chuck doesn't have time to do it, simply do what Ron did at Platinum: Engage Bud Buschardt as a "friend" of the station, and let Bud make the final decision over what version was indeed the real one (and which edit was the "radio" one.) I'm also finding that the old American Top 40 shows are good for that as well (unless you're trying to duplicate the infamous KVIL song edits, and you'll need old airchecks for that.)

With all the P2P sites that *ARE* still solvent, finding original versions is still pretty easy...it just takes a KEEN ear, a good memory, and plenty of time and patience. Good thing with Buschardt is that he probably has every Hot 100 song known to man, and every version as well, in his personal collection!!

But this is certainly not the first or the last case of misidentified song versions...I sent XM/Sirius a list of theirs not that long ago. People rely on their memories, and sometimes you just forget.

Who does middays on KGVL?

Guess the days of jocks on weekends and all nights have disappeared like ... The Shadow :).

Many times when a station is gathering a music library, they grab collection CD's and 'rip 'em in' only to find out later that there's something wrong. KGVL must be in the process of addressing these 'problems' because I've been hearing the correct versions of Little Richard songs lately, and they seem to have purchased a real jingle package. This stuff is not easy when you have a limited staff and limited funds. If you're the PD or owner, you have to do everything yourself. I'll admit that this is my 'hot button' too, but on balance, these guys are doing a great job of providing (mostly) live, local radio to Hunt county The most important thing right now is revenue generation and, I'm guessing that is probably their main priority, as it should be. BTW, to 'Radio Truth', I listen to KGVL mainly when Chuck Brinkman is on the air because he is a friend. And, you can only hope to DREAM of having the radio career he's had. Please, show some respect.

John is correct!

It's easy to harshly criticize if you have never walked in their shoes... Wannabes tend to do it a lot... ;)

This station is a work in progress and the new jingles are a big improvement. It sounded like they rushed to get this format on the air so they used whatever CD's they had. I hope someone at the station read my post on the last KGVL thread of the incorrect versions they were playing. (and if they still need copies of the right versions or mono single versions for AM radio please drop me a private message)

I commend KGVL for doing live and local oldies when it would have been so easy to stick on another satellite format, simulcast with the FM or make it an aural billboard like 1360, 990 or 1160. It's a tough format to make it work and I hope they can make some money with it on that small signal.

I think said person had walked in those shoes, but may be miffed that perhaps that person's syndicated program was of no interest to KGVL. Just a guess.

Personally, Chuck sounds as good now as ever.

His voice belies his years. He is smooth.

Obviously, he is a straight-forward DJ I would say much like Chuck Dunaway.

Chuck D. told me once he knew he was no good at comedy so he didn't do it.

Chuck Brinkman talks about the music and the artists ... what's going on in Greenville, etc.

If you are looking for yuks ... reach for the dial.

Regards,
Tony
