KMOD-AM gave it a quick shot in 1981-2..but was hampered by cheap ownership and that weak signal.

By which you mean KXXO 1300 (just before it switched to big band/jazz KBBJ), yes?

My memory is really hazy on this..1300 has had so many format flips.

But I remember 1300 became KMOD-AM by 1979-80 and simulcasted off-on with the FM. They may have used a automation system to fill the gaps between the simulcasts. Then around 1981 KMOD-AM tried CHR..almost what we call now a "Hot AC" format, mostly pop like Hall & Oates and little rock. But I remember it was a half-hearted attempt - no jingles or any kind of promotion and it didn't last long.

Im going to look for more 14K-92K... just found a tape of KWEN Rock 95 in my collection that needs to be encoded.

When was KWEN 95 a rock station? I remember it as "KWEN Stereo 95" when they played artists like Barry Manilow, etc. but never as a rock station - maybe it was after I left Tulsa.

I'd love to hear that.

..thanks Gary for emailing me about this thread.

Firstly, I was a huge KWEN 95 listener. Larry O'Jay (nights) was a big influence. I don't know what happened to him.

14K/92K was incredibly good to me. I had done a couple years in Okmulgee before that. It was a great staff with Mel and Dave... and Duncan Peyton ("Beaver Cleaver") who went on to program in Las Vegas and San Diego.

I've been in Dallas at ABC Radio Networks 10+ years. Now doing nights on the AC format (http://www.hitsandfavorites.com), with some very familiar faces in the building! Randy Fuller often works a couple studios down the hallway for ABC's Oldies Network (http://www.oldiesradioonline.com). Randy was KELI's Sunday afternoon countdown show host, which I took over after he left.

And Sherry Rogers works for Radio Disney (http://radio.disney.go.com). She was PD of Tulsa's 92FM when it was soft AC based in Broken Arrow (before 92K). And we worked together at K-107.

..the coment that our last hour on the air sounded "scripted" hit me kinda funny. For the most part it was just everyone getting in the very large production room at the Skelly Dr. studios and sharing some good stories.

Those were good times.

No kidding! What is still confusing to some people is that 1300 has the historic KAKC calls now, but some people don't know that the KAKC calls were originally on 970.

Right! KAKC became KCFO-AM around 1980-2. From what I remember KCFO was adding more Christian talk shows to the AM, which was mostly southern gospel music then, and wanted to drop the still "rock" image of the KAKC calls. 1300 picked them around 1985 when they went ABC oldies.

And 1300 has flipped again.. back to ESPN sports. Like thats really gonna help 1430.

My memory is extremely hazy on this, but my memory is that they held on to the KAKC calls at 970 at least until 1984. I remember promos on KCFO-FM referencing shows on KAKC.

I think you're right. And at some point in there close to that era, 970 KAKC was formatted as "Country Gospel."

I only know this because when I worked up on the hill there at 970 in the '90s, there were still some old bumper stickers stuck to the engineer's office wall.

On that note...did ORU's team used to be called the Titans? There was an "ORU Titans" sticker in the old fridge in the hall at KCFO.

The Titans must've been before my time.

Yes, ORU was the Titans until 93 or 94, when they became the Golden Eagles.
