14K For A Day 2011

A quick reminder to those who are interested that we'll again air our "14K For A Day" tribute to Mel Meyers, Dave Michaels, Bo Chase, and the whole K-Crew from KELI-AM 1430 & KELI-FM 92.1 this Tuesday, August 23rd, from midnight to midnight central time.

This year's show will featured expanded interviews with the staff who worked to make 14K & 92K happen in Tulsa from August of 1983 to August of 1985. Airchecks of the station, mostly unscoped, will fill out the rest of the broadcast day, include the K-Crew's last hour, which will air between 11pm and midnight central time Tuesday night.

Thanks, Billy. I appreciate your help over the years; we wouldn't have the first couple of minutes of the last hour of the stations without your contributions... and we SURE wouldn't have a copy of "It Ain't Right!" (I still can't believe you found that!)

I'm hoping to have some VERY cool additions next year. This year I was a bit distracted with work and family, but I still had kind comments about it, what I always appreciate it.

There have been some very cool things happen in Tulsa radio over the years, but 14K is a personal project for me. I could say I champion it because It took on the establishment & won; or because they did music on AM, & I've always been a strong believer that quality programming wins no matter WHAT the band; I could say I champion it because Bo Chase, Duncan Payton, Brian Kane, Randy Fuller, & so many of the rest of the K-Crew went on to become, nationally, big deals.

The reality is, I champion 14K because when I was a nerd in Junior High, after a day of getting picked on at school, and having no girlfriend to go out with, I could go to my room, shut the door, turn out the lights, open the drapes and the windows, and turn on the radio. Over the static and hum would play songs that connected with me in a way no other station's music did.

The announcers all talked to me like I was really cool, too. (Turns out that was because they couldn't see through the radio and were talking to someone else... but it SOUNDED like they were treating me like their best friend.)

Poor Dave... and Mel... and Duncan... and Rod... and Kelley... and all the rest of the K-Crew unfortunate to get one of my calls... I drove them CRAZY with goofy questions when they were just there trying to play the hits, but they answered every question the best they could and always treated me like I WAS their best friend.

For that alone, they deserve awards, all of them. ;D

It was the staff's devotion to the audience that drives my devotion to the station's memory, today. Anyone who flipped a switch, wired a connection, or processed a piece of paper that came through that building, has become my hero.

Sappy? You bet. But that's what happens when someone, even if that someone is a 300 ft erector set of steel & wires, really plugs in to your life & your interests at the age of 14.

It was the kind of radio that made you want to get into radio, too, so you could pass it forward. Mel has told me it has amazed him how many people he's met who decided to get into radio because of 14K... but I totally get it.
 
I hate to say it, but I only caught about 30 minutes of your broadcast due to work, family matters and just forgetting about it. :'(

I remember when KAY-107 debuted on the air in the summer of 1982 and I remember being very disappointed with their presentation. Especially when I could pick up stations on my trusty Realistic STA-90 receiver on a FM skip from Wichita, OKC and even Siloam Springs-Bentonville (KMCK) doing a much better job with the CHR format.

So to stumble onto 14-K one afternoon on the H.E. Bailey heading to Edmond (for college) in August of 1983 was a nice surprise. Again it was such a shame what happened.
 
Yes. 14/92k should have lasted longer indeed. We had one like 14/92k in the respect it was very short-lived but excellent here in OKC. That was "The Zoo" KZUE 103. What an amazing rise and fall in such a short time....
