14x , then and now:

I know* that ted shredd, was on 14x, for exactly one year.
(1991, i believe it was)...*however*

- i could have sworn , that 14x , was ON aire,
early in the 80s, when top40 radio, was the format.
(w/ 'top40,sounding jingles, and "clutter-free,14x")
*if not, the "x'' branding, at least 14---something, can any one help ?

(perhaps, 1440 ?) but...i dont give them enough credit.

They did a Top 40 format as "14 Rock" around that time. Seem to remember them playing "Rock Me Amadeus" (when it was a current hit).

...and for a while they simply simulcasted WPHD FM.

That was around 1988, mostly pre-British Invasion oldies. Didn't last long (a little over a year). Also recall that 14 Rock was popular with kids who were saddled with the AM radio (only) equipped family car (until they saved up for a de-luxe Sparkomatic FM adapter).

I seem to recall a period somewhere back there as WGKT - 14-Karat Gold.
That was replaced by a pretty interesting satellite format called "KOOL Gold" that originated out of KOOL-AM in Phoeniix(sister station of oldies KOOL-FM). This format was oldies up until the mid 60s(I think), but mostly lesser known hits. You gotta love an oldies format that plays "Say Man" by Bo Diddley & Jerome Green. One afternoon they switched over to 14x(which was mostly heavy metal rock?).

i knew it !*

14 rock, i knew i would remember it, once some one typed it..thanks !
I recall, the 'hits' were, well the original "hack/err...jack fm"

Going from song to song with no real mesh or reason.

Queen, Another one bites the dust; to the short lived "ET" movie mix
(interviewing an the alien, using REAL songs, editted in, to
preloaded questions), *back to a hit like * Don't You Want Me - by Alcazar ,
and then round that out w/ Pac-Man fever, or BallRoom Blitz..
(and yes, i am pretty sure, this *WAS* after they charted, lol : )

14 rock.
that station needs to be back on buffalo airwaves.

since...the [14]in 1440, isnt doing much these days,
call that buffalo native, that buys up radio stations!!
(most recent acquiring: a pair of dallas stations, for a cool 9 mill in the till : )

yea,i believe his name is charles...as the commercial says:

"Talk to chuck! "

well, any way: thnx !! next logical question:
any one have airchecks from 14-ROCK ?

The "14 Rock – Buffalo's Hit Music Station" that I remember—from the summer of '86—was exactly as Obtuse1 describes (and kudos to Obtuse for even remembering one of the hits from the playlist back then, "Rock Me Amadeus"). I worked there part-time—primarily 7-midnight Saturdays—from early '86 through mid-summer, under PD Bob Richards and OM John Hager, until the plug was pulled and it began simulcasting 103PHD. As a 22-year-old playing the hits in the "big city" (well, compared with Batavia) for the first time, it was great fun.

In response to Radio_bored-Op: Yes, believe it or not, I still have some airchecks.

Mike

This discussion reminded me of the Pirate Radio from the late 80's named "Rebel radio 13X."

Any takers on that discussion? The headline Jock from 13X was Meltdown, uh... they drove a hearse to their on location broadcasts... actually ran into problems with the FCC... they only were on the air for a few years.

That would be "14 X".

Re: 13X... then and now:

It could have been WxRL during that very, very brief time when it was punk country with Rumblin' Lou playing songs like I Wanna Whip Yer Cow and groups like Possum Nutz and Bullspit.

PickleReport and Radknowski... I feel a bit ridiculous!

Once i read the post about "super country WXRL," I remembered that 1300 was indeed WXRL. Heck Buckaroo's, I should have remembered that because I jocked there for about one year, some 20 years ago (damn now I feel old and I haven't even gone over the hill yet).

How could I forget: "You're listening to Super Country WXRL," or playing the pre-recorded decks of "This is Ramblin Lou, and we'll be right back with more super country on your favorite AM station, Super Country WXRL."

So, then my buddy Meltdown and the pirate station he was with was indeed 14X? I suppose? There where many other distractions when the club I worked at was contracting them for remote broadcasts, and sometime has pasted since then too.
