I remember the 97 Rock period. I don't ever remember 96.5 being alternative.

and the first song they played was "Roll With It" by Steve Wynwood...I was listening...

It stunted as "Alternative 96.5" for a couple of months between the end of the "Energy 96.5" incarnation and the launch of "Mix." Actually not a bad format while it lasted--lots of stuff that hadn't gotten much airplay in this market.

So was I. After all the clock ticking stopped, they had the end of the Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today", then a mock classroom of Houston radio programmers (who were actually named in a "roll call") who were "assembled" for the launch at 7am that morning.

It's funny (and sad, too) that the stunting formats get better reviews in Houston than the actual formats.

It's funny...I saw a "97 Rock" bumper sticker on a car a few days ago on the Beltway. I'm almost 100% certain it was the exact same logo/design as it was back then.

Funny thing was, it was on a relatively new car (I think it was a Honda Element or something that couldn't have been much more than 1 or 2 years old).

I, too, am scarred by that memory.

David, thanks for the reminder. David Baerwald on the radio? I must have missed him 15 years ago - I've only ever heard him on my CDs!

Alternative 96.5

It was Alternative for a little over a month or two.

Corporate new they were going to switch it to Mix and needed time to get it ready.

They told Guy Zapoleon he could do whatever he wanted to for a couple of months. He wanted to do Alternative to show that it could work in Houston and hope someone would pick it up after it went away. He was right but it took years before Rocket 107.5 came on.

THere ya go.

Re: Alternative 96.5

I was told they were actually testing the format for another market.
