15 Years Ago Today

15 years ago was the final death of local community radio in Bristol, Connecticut. Bristol a town I grew up in from the time I was 9 months old until the time I was 21. Bristol where I live now. It was on this date that WBIS 1120 Bristol officially became La Puertoriqenmisma WPRX 1120 broadcasting from studios in New Britain. Their towers still remain on Sherbrook Street in Bristol.

From these pictures on NECRAT.COM the towers appear to be right in back of the condos. These people must get WPRX through the fillings in their teeth.

http://www.necrat.com/wprx_proam.html

These days I live off of South Street in Bristol and I'm close enough to their towers to get WPRX splattered from 1110 all the way to 1220.

WPRX/1120 is currently owned by Nievezquez Productions Inc and have studios and offices in an old factory building on Ellis Street in New Britain right off Route 9.

While I don't speak or understand Spanish I'm a huge fan of Reggaeton Music and I love WPRX's Reggaeton show and I would like to encourage people to tune into the show Saturday Nights at 6PM. 1120 on your AM dial and at http://www.wprx1120.net/ (And no, the staff of Reggaeton Saturday Night is not paying me to plug their show).

Interestingly enough many people believe that the station for sale at http://www.radio4sale.com/forsale.php is WPRX 1120. Wouldn't it be ironic if it was indeed the station and it got sold and they flipped the format back to English Language programming and ruined the 15th Anniversary Celebration?

Wow, you leave CT for a few days, and STILL nothing happens in the world of radio....

What did you expect to happen? WRCH flipped back to regular format today. The Big D did 36 hours of XMAS on Wednesday. WHCN did all XMAS. And WZMX did 45 mins of XMAS Music during the old school block on Tuesday. Although I have to say I enjoyed the soulful version of Silent Night they played by The Temptations.

Did anyone change format?

Not to start any rumors, but I'm just tuning around right now and WHCN HD-1 is playing Stevie Wonder - Superstition, I either don't know the current format very well or they've changed! (waits and hears a river promo and then Frankie goes to Hollywood - Relax)

Ok, I don't know the current format all that well, I still picture them as a more mellowed out version or the former Rock 106 with the walrus.

No, they have a pretty wide-ranging format. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the 2 songs you mentioned. I quite enjoy the format, even classic rock thrown in.

Big D has retained the Christmas music -- three or four songs an hour -- straight through the long weekend, a change from previous years, when the holiday tunes would disappear completely at midnight Dec. 26.

It's not just The Big D. I've heard XMAS Music Mixed in on Friday and Saturday on Lite 100.5, WALK 97.5, and 740 WNYH. Also the in-house music at Price Chopper in Southington was still all XMAS on Friday as was the Southington Walmart. Today when I was back at work (after the long weekend) they were playing regular music at the Walmart.

I still remember listening to WBIS at nights and hearing them sign off with a really bad version of "Yankee Doodle Dandy."

I remember as a kid going to Burger King and as I would sit there and eat I would stare at the building next door where the magic of radio was being broadcast from.

I miss WBIS.

Ah, yes, who could forget 1021 Farmington Avenue on Route 6 in Bristol right next door to the Burger King? I also used to do that whenever I traversed into Bristol.

I still have my WBIS Bumper Stickers

I always wanted to visit WBIS when they were on Farmington Ave but my parents wouldn't let me go. They told me a radio station was no place for a little kid. Then they illegally moved to 47 Bradley Street on Federal Hill.

As WPRX they've moved quite a few times: 610 Main Street New Britain, 10 Main Street New Britain, 81 West Main Street Suite G New Britain, 20-27 Sargent Street Hartford, and now 321 Ellis Street in New Britain. It should be noted that the reason they left 10 Main Street was because the owner of the building was approached by a restaurant and felt a restaurant would be better in that location than a radio station because it was across the street from the new court house. It's a pizza place I think.

Actually, a Subway is being moved into that space, at the corner of West Main and Washington Streets. The existing one on Main Street is set to close since the building they're in now is going to be demolished. New Britain's new police station will eventually take that space up.

I beg your pardon!!! I was PD at 'BIS then, and I'm the one who came up with that version of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for part of our daily sign off. It was by Paul Jabara and was a short version that sounded great!
