1510 KFNN IN VEGAS, 6pm PT

Really surprised to hear 1510 KFNN / Pheonix, AZ at just 100 watts at 6pm PT in Las Vegas, near Boulder City at the intersection of US 93 and US 95. It was very strong for 10 minutes and then faded out. KFNN is about 23,000 watts during the day.

It's actually 22,000 watts daytime and they might have been running that much power at 7 PM Phoenix time. They've been caught running their daytime power well after sunset several times now (an issue that also affects KFNX 1100; the FCC apparently doesn't enforce their power-down regs).

At 100 watts from a transmitter on the far-north side of the city (shared with KKNT 960, with the same pattern), they're all but inaudible in most of the metro at night. There's almost no way they'd make it to Vegas with that power since they have to protect KGA Spokane and KPIG San Francisco. There's a slight peak more toward Oregon, but my guess is that it radiates around 25 watts in that direction at best. KFNN's major nighttime lobe is to the southwest.

A number of people, including some well outside of Phoenix, have reported that KFNN is failing to lower power. I thought I heard them here in Texas around sunset, too, but I wasn't sure because of WLAC and a semi-local on 1510.

I too have heard KFNN 1510 in Orange County CA after sunset and heard them stepping on KSPA (Ontario) ... heard them between 6 and 7 pm well after local sunset around 4:50 pm.

KFNN on Thursday - Moe Ansari was loud and clear during his broadcast of 6pm-7pm Phoenix time, that's after local sunset time for PHX. However, by 1130pm, Lars Larsen on KGA 1510 Spokane was fading in and out with numerous others.

By the way, I was thinking of asking what is your favorite frequency(s) to DX? My vote might be 1510 with all the class D's. 1090 is interesting before XETRA takes over at sunset.

!!! - Just heard Ray Lucia on the air for 15 seconds, loud and clear, now it's back to Lars and friends sharing 1510. Maybe KFNN does make it to Vegas with their nightime power/pattern.

Re: 1510 KFNN

Again, heard KFNN the other night at about 3am oscillating with other 1510's. They were *NOT* under daytime operations. So they do make it to Vegas at night. And, the signal gets stonger at +/- 6am Phoenix time, when you can hear them at 5am in Vegas.

It's a haunted frequency. lol

btw, Reuters gave Moe Ansari and COMPAQ some sort of award but can't find it on the internet
