Between 06:30 - 07:00 a couple of recent mornings (in Dallas) listening to 1520 KOKC (Oklahoma City) I also hear a Classic Country station on 1520. Any ideas what it might be ?

Thanks !

KRHW Sikeston, Missouri. They're very frequently heard on 1520 when they shouldn't be...including up here in KB-land.

Wonder if anyone's checked to see if KRHW is running at their authorized power/pattern ? From Rochester to Dallas is a lot of coverage for a highly directional 1600 watt night pattern. Actually, by 0630 they're probably on their 5KW critical hours pattern. Which is porbably not supposed to reach from Rochester to Dallas either. ;D

Yes, I've heard them on a fairly regular basis here in East Texas, too. Note that they're supposed to be on their critical hours pattern this month (with 5,000 watts, same as daytime) until 7:45 CDT.

Sounds like they either have a computer lock-up on their switching or euqipment issues, or they are playing a game. Unfortuantly that's more common than it used to be it seems. There's another 1520 in Lousyana that sometimes would stay non-D quite a bit for sports. I don't know if they are still playing that GAME, but they sure did a few years back...

That's KFXX-AM from Lafayette, Louisiana. They're supposed to beam south-southeast but I've been also able to pick them up here in East Texas over KOKC with a country oldies format.

That would fit. It's always Classic Country. Whatever it is. Sure are a lot of stations on 1520. Thought that frequency belonged to Buffalo & OKC.

The FCC has let a lot more stations stay on at night further out etc, but the Lousyana station sure isn't one of them recent allowed to modify their nightime authorization.

What makes this a little more interesting is that apparently KFXZ hasn't been running full power for quite a while. They filed a request for an STA stating that they were awaiting an insurance payment so they could make transmitter repairs, and would need to run 1kW non-directional during daytime hours instead of their licensed 10kW. Two years later they're still waiting, according to their latest request for an extension of the STA. They don't specifically mention critical hours, but we can assume they're also talking about running 1kW during CH instead of their licensed 10kW [correcting my prior statement about 5kW]. The STA applications note that nighttime operation (with 500 watts) isn't affected. That said, the question remains: do we know whether they're using their directional pattern as required at night and during critical hours?

Good question. If I'm hearing them in Dallas, I would guess not, but that would only be a guess. When I've heard (whatever station I'm hearing behind KOKC) the times that it's been clear enough to identify, it's been music. I haven't heard any annoucing clearly enough to be sure whic other 1520 it is. But they definitely play Classic Country.

Sadly this kind of stuff has been going on all over the country in places. The FCC is too busy figuring out how to auction TV channels away from broadcasters to care. Make sure that new 3000 EAS box that's compatible with the new IPAWS garbage is hooked up, running, and you're manually logging every little fart including when someone else doesn't send their tests (explain it). Never mind they can't come up with anything better than the damn Internet as a primary way to deliver national stuff to states. What a joke... The FCC.

Oh yeah... I forgot their favorite thing to pick on folks for is the public file. Oh the humanity! A piece of paper from their goofed up website wasn't in the right file folder! Oh no! Someone needs to tell that bunch that their primary job was supposed to prevent interference. That includes keeping directionals to their licensed parameters so they won't interfere with co-channels.
