1520 OLDIES JOCK? NAME??

There was a jock on Oldies 1520 that in my opinion was phenomenal And I must confess that though I'm located in South Jersey I was able to listen to the station in my vehicle after around 6 PM in the winter.

I believe he was the rush hour jock. Does anyone remember his name and what station he went to or is he available for hire?

Thanks! Josh - South Jersey Station Owner

I believe that was him :(

There just aren't that many talented djs doing radio any more. This guy was a rarity.

The only other guy that stood in my mind as being as that level was the late, Dr. Don Rose of WFIL-AM 560, PHILADELPHIA.

Nowaday, too many jocks sound like they're hosting an NPR Program. josh

Jack was the best I ever heard doing that style of radio. We lost him MUCH too early.

Jackson Armstrong was at KB in Buffalo, while I was working at a little station in the Mohawk Valley. My first full time gig. I used to listen to him on my way home. He used to make the speaker in my Ford Falcon vibrate. Although I knew I couldn't, and didn't want to, duplicate his style, he was was an insperation to me for his professionalism and the entertainment he provided. Check the quote below from Johnny Fever. It reflects more about him than just about anyone else that has ever been on the radio.
Happy New Year everyone.

The last time kb was oldies the afternoon jock was Steve Mitchell who now does production at WJJL

Jack Armstrong was voice-tracking nights from Greensboro, NC in the 'KB reincarnation. Dunno who did afternoons. If you're interested in Armstrong's body of work, Big Apple Airchecks had a compilation of all the stations he worked at, it's over two hours long and is a download of over 150 MB but well worth the time and effort.

As much as his...and to be fair, Sandy Beach, Don Berns, Jim Pastrick and Jim Quinn's (all 'KB alumni from the '70's) style inspired me to take up radio as a career, what REALLY impresses me in retrospect, is how Armstrong evolved with the evolution of radio. His last live gig, AM Drive at an Entercom oldies station in Greensboro NC, showed that he still had a lot to offer his listeners. Jack's voice-tracking 'KB nights happened during this last AM drive gig. Don't know what the ratings were for the 'KB revival but I did hear that the left-wing talk format that replaced it in 2006 has been tanking in the ratings. I just checked the trends: 0.5-1.3-1.0-0.8 over the past year. 1.1 in the newest trend.

For the record, Jack Armstrong voice tracked evenings from 6 to 10 when KB went with the oldies format in January 2003. When afternoon host and PD Hank Nevins left KB (not sure of the specific date), Jack moved to 3 to 8pm, again voice tracked from North Carolina. So, indeed, the person who started this thread did hear Jack during afternoon drive for much of (if not all of) 2005 prior to the switch to progressive talk in January 2006. At the end of the oldies format, Steve Mitchell was hosting from 12noon to 3pm. If memory serves, the oldies format earned KB between a 1.5 to 2.0 12+ share during its three years on the air. The progressive talk format has been lucky to top a one share in its four years on the air. But, of course, Entercom is not paying any salaries, so they're probably satisfied.

I worked for Entercom at my current station from '92-'96. If it saves the Fields $1.72 over three years, they'll do it. When they sold us, we celebrated. We've been CBS since '98, and when they make cutbacks...I remember the way Entercom was with our station and I feel better.

Jack's My Space is still maintained by daughter Devon. www.myspace.com/jackadj . Concentrates on later years but when Jack was alive he blogged at length about being MD at WIFE/Indy. Very detailed with dates, record promotors and their labels, etc. Also a GREAT story in there about mc'ing a Beatles concert while in Cleveland at WIXY in '66.

Not to sound like a stuck record but I hope Devon will finish and publish his memoirs. The book was apparently to be called "Rock Jocks" and according to a friend of mine was close to completion when he died.
