1530 HOMER / WLW SportsTalk

Conspiracy theory:

I had heard that Furman was "encouraged" to keep the crap going with TJ, which of course resulted in him crossing the line and getting fired. Is it looking now more and more like this "encouragement" was a set-up? Did CC management cook up a way to get rid of him and his salary?

Rant:

So now presumably all of the cuts at CC mean Tom Gamble will keep the WLW SportsTalk gig permanently. I don't see them going back to the Two Angry Guys shtick on HOMER. And now with Pic gone and Fox Sports programming from 10-noon, HOMER is down from four to two live personalities. And McConnell isn't local anymore in that time slot on WLW. At the rate they're going, CC better be careful that they don't start giving listeners a reason to check out Supertalk 96.5 to get their syndication fix.

I understand how business works but would have to agree with JC McCoy in the "More Cuts" thread. I'm glad my paycheck doesn't come from a radio company anymore. Happy I made the decision to get out a long, long time ago. My sympathies to those still in the biz.....you who just got cut and those of you who will sooner or later. The sad thing is, I honestly believe the only hope that terrestrial radio has is to once again become more live and local. And yet, here we have CC continuing to move in the other direction. And now virtually no live jocks at all on MIX or KISS? Why in the world would anyone listen, much less put up with the preposterous 5-8 minute commercial blocks.

I gave up listening to FM radio in favor of XM and Sirius several years ago. If AM eventually gets to the point where there is less and less local programming, there will be no point in listening to AM either.

What happened with Piecoro? I heard Fox Sports yesterday when I tuned in and noticed that he was quickly removed from the the 1530 web site.

Was it simply a budget cut or something else?

Until I can see some solid nighttime daypart #'s, I fail to see why anyone could possibly care about nighttime sportstalk.

Yeah, I get WLW has a long, illustrious history of evening sportstalk, but there ARE NO SIGNIFICANT #'S at night to care.

If you A) have not seen any night time daypart numbers and B) are "new to the Nasti", how can you say there are "No significant #'s" at night or any daypart for that matter. If you are going off your "gut feeling" I suggest you head to Golden Corral.

Sorry to offend the regulars, I'm just trying to understand--you all are right, I have no idea what the numbers or billing $$$ are at night...

Having worked in several other markets, I know the numbers drop off significantly after 6pm. Is the market that much different here to warrent the attention a nighttime sportstalk show garners???

Thanks for the insight...

I agree that the future of talk radio simply must be rebuilt using local shows, with a local base of callers. Its the quality/diversity of the callers that make the difference nowadays. Syndicated shows seem to only draw upon kooks who are able to stay on hold for endless periods of time, only to say some lame comment that the host simply uses to launch into his next dialog. That gets boring after about 3 minutes.

Nobody listens to talk radio for the callers. Nobody. The callers are only there to make the host look good, or to give him/her a launching pad into another point. That's it. End of story.

I wish I had an answer to NewtotheNasti's question, but I don't. I also wish someone would answer him. It appears to be a perfectly valid question to me.

Thanks for the show of support DJ. Perhaps I sounded a little strident in my earlier post which turned some people off to my request...

I'll get my hands on a book soon and be able to answer my own question hopefully--I promise to share. :)

I'd be willing to bet the #'s (both biliing & arbitron) for Lance McCallister's show on 1530 obliterate any nighttime #'s for WLW's nightly sportstalk daypart--especially in the key M 25-54 demo--hence my amazement at the attention WLW's nighttime sportstalk has received.

But who knows, maybe Cincinnati IS different than other markets I've worked in--but I'm still willing to take the bet :)

True, but in the early days of talk radio there used to be a real interaction between the hosts and the callers and it really was interesting for the listeners. That has all changed, and drastically. Now the callers are handpicked and orchestrated to be 'presented' to the host in just the right order and just the right time in order to make the host appear to be all knowing. Its really sickening once you figure out all the tricks these all-knowing hosts use to appear to never lose an argument.
