1540 KEDA Sold

:'(

KEDA was the best little station in the state. KROB is the exact same format, but SA will now lose all of the support the community used to receive from the Davilas. On the plus side, Claro Communications seems to be fond of using FM translators so we may see Conjunto on FM again (and this time legally).

Thsad part of this seems to be why it happened.

It's been known that the Davila's were lookking to get out of KEDA. Infamous can confirm this. Now it seems the actual deal that made this work wasn't the radio deal but the real estate deal with H-E-B. They are buying the studio building and I can only guess since it is in the back of their corporate headquarters that they will teardown the studio building and put in additional parking...

There's a Jonie Mitchel song in there somewhere.

Note the deal for the signal is not a sale, per se, but a programming agreement.

It'll be interesting to see what the final deal for the station itself is, whether it ultimately get sold to Benevides or what.

Are they running jockless at the moment? I'm streaming the station at the moment and don't hear any live radio personalities. They allways had live jocks on the air in the 70s and 80s, at least in most dayparts.

Haven't the Davila's been trying to sell KEDA for at least several several years now. It makes sense that the HEB deal sealed the deal to sell the station. HEB, afterall, is going by leaps and bounds these days.

Yeah the last time I tried to negotiate a deal with the Davila's for this station was about 3 years ago. At that time they were asking $2.1 million for the station (which was a really great price) but they wanted an all cash deal back then. They have a 6 tower array and at that time many of the towers needed some TLC. The upkeep and maintenance for a directional AM with that many towers was a little intimidating to say the least. I'm thinking now that they will be able to sell the studio property to HEB, Benavides either snagged the license really cheap or got them to agree to terms (or even both). I don't know how he does it but he always finds a way to buy up stations way below market value. I'd be really surprised if he paid more then $2 million for the station. I guess we shall see.

Maybe the 102.3 simulcast of KROB in SA will come back.

Can anyone actually hear 1540 AM? I'm not in SA at the moment.

They are still on, but no ID's or station sweeps from what I have heard.

Is the new KEDA going to continue their bilingual Saturday morning garden show? This morning, I caught the tail end of their supplimental social security investment firm show, which was still local. Since they most likely have to continue to air the remaining shows of the sponsor paid infomercial contract, does anyone know about the garden show? If the new KEDA chooses not to keep it, will some other station pick it up?

HEB just closed on the deal to buy the land from the Davila's. More here:

Downtown grocery in limbo

H-E-B closed on the lots at 512 and 516 S. Flores, the former site of the KEDA “Radio Jalapeño” conjunto station, this week. They total about six-tenths of an acre and combined are assessed at $818,390, according to the Bexar Appraisal District.

Yeah the 180ft STL tower has already been taken down and removed. From what I hear HEB is going to build a bakery there. I guess we shall see what they really do in the months to come.

I drove down South Flores street yesterday afternoon and noticed that the old KEDA building was gone. The area has been completely swept clean and all that is left is the remnants of the foundation slab. I hadn't been by there since Monday, when the building was still standing, so I don't know exactly when it was torn down and hauled away.

How are they running the station now with the building gone? Is there a feed from somewhere else to the transmitter? There seems to be a live DJ broadcasting on the AM, and the internet stream is down.

Claro chief Gerald Benavides, who owns several radios stations and low-power TV stations in the U.S., said he expects transfer of the FCC license to be final by October.

What happen with the transfer being final by October? There hasn't even been a form 314 filed with the FCC for assignment of the license.

I wonder how many watts KEDA is running at? The signal is really horrible right now.

I thought the whole idea of Gerald purchasing this AM was so he could be "LEGAL" with his 102.3 translator. There is Spanish Christian programming on the translator. I don't even know where it originates from. It wasn't the audio source from 87.7 from the tv station he is leasing out. That was some other Spanish Christian programming. I couldn't find any other station on the AM or FM dial with the same programming that was on the 102.3 translator. Perhaps it's the AM in Boerne? Don't know since it doesn't come into SA and if it is that is definitely NOT legal.

K272EK is simulcasting KBRN 1500 out of Boerne. It broadcasts programming from Radio Formula Network, a talk station out of Mexico City.
