1540 -- Wishful-thinking DX down the dial

As Cyberdad goes up the dial, I kinda go the other way so as not to conflict.
1540 is my week's meagre attempt at a conversation.

(It's WNWR Philly in the day here ; KXEL and Albany at night have been logged)

So I want to hear ZNS. Again. It would be a newie for me here in NE PA.

Back in Queens (near JFK Airport) ZNS used to come in well when everything else was off. But even when I DXed in FLORIDA, ZNS was *barely* readable at night. I always thought that they ran their processing at 10% audio to save money. Why the devil should THEY care if they were being heard outside The Bahamas?
I may stand corrected -- as usual -- but isn't ZNS is the 'protected' 1540 facility in the northwestern hemisphere?

Your one desire on 1540?

I often tried for WPTR here in the Chicago area during their Top 40 years, but KXEL was always too strong. Snagged ZNS once I think on a Monday morning when I was actually trying for the 1540 in LA, but never heard it.

I've never heard ZNS in Ohio. Even when I try the Florida SDRs (just checked Miami and Key West within the past 30 seconds), something is audible but barely listenable. Has to be ZNS. If they're heard anywhere in the States, Florida would be the logical place given the proximity.
Only 1540 I've ever lived near was KGBC in Galveston, Texas. I think they tucked in their signal inland at night but I lived about 20 miles from their towers for a few years and they put a decent signal into my area. Their programming now doesn't interest me but I've never seen a far-flung reception report including them.

KASA Phoenix, if I can catch them on the 10,000 watt day power. This one is my most-wanted, running Regional Mexican.

That wont happen anytime soon, their recent STA Request... we're talking maybe a few hundred watts here

KASA Radio Hogar, licensee of AM radio broadcast station KASA, Phoenix, Arizona,
currently operates with a three tower directional array located on a large parcel of land on
Baseline Road in Phoenix. A substantial portion of that property is under contract to be
sold. The buyer plans to demolish the radio towers. Accordingly, the licensee is
requesting special temporary authority (STA) to operate KASA with parameters at
variance while the towers are removed, a new site is found, a construction permit is
applied for and new permanent facilities are erected.

The STA Facility will be set up on a portion of land adjacent to the existing transmitter
site. At that location, KASA Radio Hogar will employ as a radiator for station KASA a
100 ft copper wire end fed antenna approximately 25 feet above ground with appropriate
transmitter and antenna tuning unit. A security fence will protect the antenna and feed
line from human contact. Because the power level will be very low, RF exposure will not
be a significant factor.

Specifically, under the STA the transmitter power will be limited to that of the current
lowest null radial. TPO will be determined by using a Field Intensity Meter to adjust the
transmitter to what is needed to achieve the minimum null requirement. Facilities for
remote control of the transmitter will be provided

Mine would definitely be ZNS. I think I did hear it clearly on a Puerto Rico SDR, at least if they play Beautiful Music at night, Most of the time it's either KXEL or Toronto. During the Eclipse, KXEL was my first identifiable distant station in Tennessee as totality approached.

ZNS is my "want" on this frequency. Stations logged are all during critical hours - KXEL - Waterloo, IA and KZMP - University Park, TX.

At night, I have yet to log a station through the mess...

"Back in the day", my most-wanted on 1540 was WPTR. Never heard it here.

More recently I kept trying for CHIN and finally heard it several years ago. I've heard it a number of times since. Usually under KXEL or sometimes around sunrise mixing with KXEL or even on top. KXEL has a monster skywave signal here.

OK, I'll change my KASA to KZMP University Park TX. Operating 32kw daytime, they have a pattern going three directions including west.
