1550 files for Northbrook

Nice application for 1.3KW Omni daytimer in Northbrook (besides the power lines). If no one steps forward to buy it, will the joint partnership finance it themselves? If no one buys this cp when issued, it will really prove the market for AM stations is over. More fun from grundy county.

Maybe they'll run a Top 40 format ;D

Is this an app for a NEW station or a "move" of an existing station (even if that station is dark but has not surrendered its license)? The FCC will not accept apps for NEW Class D AMs (that is, daytimers). They will, however, accept apps to change the CoL of existing Class Ds and/or change existing full-time AMs to Class D. An app for a NEW Class D AM may be reported as tendered for filing, but it will not be accepted for filing and will be returned to the applicant.

I wonder which station would be moving?

What I read was Lake Geneva station moves to Northbrook and Morris turns in its license. The station seems to be erecting a new short tower. You can see the application on the fcc web site. I tried to post a link, but it didn't work.

Is Lake Geneva still on the air? They're not listed in Radio-Locator.

radioman148 is forever the optimist here on this board and I share in that optimism.

The owner wants to move the station from Lake Geneva to Northbrook. I'm not in the Midwest, so I do not know the anwer to this question: Is there another station (FM or AM) that is licensed to Lake Geneva? If not, the FCC will not allow the move. Regardless of how many other audio broadcast signals are audible in (or even provide CoL-quality signals to) the community from which an owner wants to move a station, the FCC will not allow a move of the last remaining station licensed to a community. I understand that this station is currently dark. I don't think that matters. Presumably, the owner has not surrendered the license becaise this is a daytime-only station and the FCC will not accept applications for new daytimers but will accept applications to move daytimers to different communities. So the station has to meet at least two criteria 1) the license is still valid and has not been surrendered and 2) there is at least one other audio broadcst station licensed to Lake Geneva.

1) Station is licensed. Change of COL from Lake Geneva, WI to Northbrook, IL - Minor Change to a Licensed Facility
2) WLKG 96.1 Lake Geneva, WI

There is one class a FM, and one translator licensed to Lake Geneva. So they will be able to move it.

They do have a nightime authorization of 1 watt, directional. They stopped using it long before they took the station
dark. So they are technically not a daytimer.

Their plan is to move the Lake Geneva license to Northbrook, Il. and cancel the license for the station in Morris, which
is 250 watts day, 6 watts night. Morris also has at least 3 licensed FM's, one of which was simulcasting the 1550 there
for the last few years.

The station in Morris, Il.(which is southwest of Joliet) was owned by Nelson Multimedia, and the station in Lake Geneva, WI.
(which is just north of the Il. border) was owned by Starboard Broadcasting. These two companies came together and formed
a new company which gives each 50/50 ownership of both stations.

No, that's incorrect. Any AM that is authorized for a nighttime RMS inverse-distance field of less than 141.85 mV/m @ 1 km is a Class D and, confusing though it may be, the terms "Class D AM" and "daytimer" are interchangeable, notwithstanding the existence of an authorization for low-power nighttime operation.

With a standard 1/4-wave antenna, 1W yields an RMS inverse-distance field of less than 10 mV/m @ 1 km--well below the 141.85 mV/m Class D night maximum. The departure of CBE will reduce the background noise on 1550, until the CRTC or Industrie Canada (or whoever is responsible for such things in Canada) reallocates the channel to Windsor or someplace else in southern Ontario. But even without CBE and with the good soil conductivity in your area, I imagine that 1W on 1550 at night would produce a signal that was listenable over a radius of not more than about 1/4 mile. Unless the transmitter is to be located in a very densely populated area, it is hard to justify trying to make any use of such a puny signal. It is a little better than a "talking house," though.
