1550 WZUM

I received an e-mail from our FCC attorney letting me know he filed the WZUM license transfer request today. It will take 45 to 90 days for the transfer to be approved.

I can honestly say I'm really going to missWZUM, filled a void in Pittsburgh radio. And brought back a lot of good memories for me !

Maybe we will keep the automation system running and stream the audio. The problem is the licensing fees are really excessively high. This way you can listen on your computer or smart phone. I often listen to WZUM at night on my iPhone in the car. It sounds better than the radio and is in stereo.

In the evenings in the summertime we have our phone plugged in and a Bluetooth speaker outside listening to the sounds of WZUM . The sound is amazing.

Sparks, you should approach Sharon Wall About using your website and Music Format for WLSW.This would give them Internet and they would pay the licensing fee's.

I should also mention Stan Wall Builder of WLSW (Ludwig Stanley Wall ).was the Morning DJ on WZUM 1590 Using the airname Jeff Michaels.

I found this on today’s FCC public notice e-mail:

PA BAL-20160126ACY
WZUM 68903 1550 KHZ
AM GUYS, LLC PA , BRADDOCK

Voluntary Assignment of License From: AM GUYS, LLC
To: PITTSBURGH PUBLIC MEDIA Form 314

Looks like things are moving forward.

We were not testing anything. The EAS messed up. Between the sounder, you should have heard a message giving the reason for the interruption. We do monitor radio stations KDKA and WQED. It also monitors a satellite channel and the Internet. One of the sources feed the wrong message.

Pittsburgh Public Media has purchased a FM translator to use with WZUM. It will be on 101.1MHz at 99 watts. They sent a Press Release today. This is the first part of it:

Pittsburgh, PA (February 10, 2016) -- Pittsburgh Public Media (PPM) has filed an application with the FCC to move forward with an FM station license to accompany its purchase of WZUM AM 1550, Braddock.

The process, which requires purchasing an existing signal and moving it to Pittsburgh, was made possible by recent changes in regulations regarding FM translators. PPM is purchasing a signal from the State University of New York for $50,000.

Along with the recently announced acquisition of WZUM-AM for is $75,000, the total cost of bringing a full-time jazz station to the Pittsburgh FM dial is a thrifty $125,000.

Do you know where they're going to locate the transmitter for 101.1?

I spoke with Chuck Leavens yesterday about the translator. Nothing is final at this point. Once the ownership transfer is complete, they have three years to get it on the air. My guess is the translator will be on-the-air as soon as they can make it happen. As for now, the Crown tower on the Northside will be it's home. They need to protect the Youngstown station on 101.1 so the antenna will be directional pointing away from the west.

Too bad you could have gotten 101.1!

This is one of the reasons we decided to sell WZUM. Before the rules changed, we could not apply or find a translator that could be moved into Pittsburgh. With the change in the rules, we knew the prices for translators would be more than we were able to handle given the large number of buyers vs the small number of sellers. Something about supply and demand. We felt this would be a good time to sell WZUM since having an AM would allow someone with the cash to buy a translator. The combined price would be a lot cheaper than trying to buy an existing FM if you could even find one. The made it easier to sell WZUM.

Sounds to me like they plan to pack the FM band so full of translators it is going to cause a lot of problems.
For one thing you can forget DX-ing stations in nearby markets. WEDO is going after one on 93.3, but
I live so close to the 93.7 tower I don't suppose I have a prayer of actually receiving it.

So no one is confused, WZUM is not changing formats tomorrow. The Saturday Light Brigade, normally on WRCT, will be on WZUM from 6AM to noon. WRCT could not take the show so instead of listeners in Pittsburgh missing the show, we are donating the 6 hours. For more info on the show, check out their website at slab radio.org.
