1550 WZUM

About 6:15AM this morning I received a telephone call from Larry Berger with the Saturday Light Brigade letting me know there was an audio problem with the WZUM feed of his show. He found out because a WZUM listener in Virginia called him. I'm guessing the listener was listening to our stream. I was able to log into the Barix decoder and reboot it. That solved the problem and the rest of the show was fine. Later in the morning, it sunk in there are people listening to WZUM at 6AM. I checked the logs and found a lot of people connected at all hours of the day.

Due to x-ray equipment the walls in our building are lead lined, we have no windows. We received no radio signals at all. On July 4th 2013 I was working overnights and just for the heck of it typed in wzum on the computer, there you were loud and clear , my boss came in ask what I was listening to she enjoyed it. A patient came by said too bad she doesn't have a computer because she enjoys it too. I told her its on the radio AM 1550. She said she would check it out on the way home. Too bad the radio station didn't take off!

I listen to WZUM on my iPhone in the car when the station is operating on low power. Given the large amounts of data the cell companies are providing, my monthly usage is hardly affected by my streaming.

I was at Home Depot in Hampton on Sunday. My son noticed a song on their PA system and made the comment about the Home Depot sounds like WZUM. The salesperson said that was her favorite radio station. I guess people do listen to it.

I was thinking about running the station just as an online station after the sale but with the loss of revenue, it would be costly to operate given the current licensing for streaming only stations.

Wzum has over-the-air listeners, I ride different people in my car and they always say what are you listening to? I tell them wzum, they say AM radio. But they enjoy the music and they to been listening. I can't tell you personally how many people I have told about the station and they started listening. I know they've told others and I'm sure they're listening. WZUM is background music at the Bloomfield post office.

The FCC approved the license transfer from AM Guys to Pittsburgh Public Media. The next step in the process is the closing which should happen in ten business days.

It may be a happy good day for you Sparks, but it's a sad day for Pittsburgh radio.WZUM brought back many good memories.

Thanks! I don't know what the new owners will do with the station. The "Heart and Soul of Pittsburgh" is still on the air. Stay tuned.

Bill Hillgrove is already Begging on wyzr.org "Put a $1,000 tax Free Donation on your Master or Visa Card NOW or you will lose your chance to put Jazz back on FM in Pittsburgh "and increase power on WYZR.

WZUM has been on from early Morning to 7:15 when your overran with interference. The past 3 Days you have been playing the best Music ever!

I listened to WZUM on my way into work today and could not help thinking about how much I will miss it. The closing date has not been set so enjoy the station for few more days. I'll post the closing date and transition information once I know more.

I presume their plan is to simulcast the jazz they are playing on 88.1 out of Bethany, WV.
And eventually land an FM translator for WZUM so that they can sandwich that signal into Pittsburgh
from the east and west.

They have not let us know what the format will be but a safe bet would be jazz. They were able to purchase a FM translator. It will be on 101.1. It will need to protect a station in Youngstown so the antenna will be directional away from Youngstown. The power will be 99 watts and 500 feet up on a tower located in the North Side of Pittsburgh. It should cover the city and areas east of the city. The additional coverage at night will be a big much needed improvement.

I'm really going to miss WZUM but I think the last song played should be so hard to say goodbye to yesterday buy GC Cameron release September 1st 1975. The last song played on the movie Cooley High.

How about "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" by "Boys II Men". It is a little earlier and is already on the system ready to go. I'll check the GC Cameron version.

GC Cameron version is Sadder, a better fit for losing a great station! It will be interesting if 101.1 stays on the air in the North Hills , WHOT from Youngstown is loud and clear in the North Hills we listen here at our house and we're only a few miles form the tower where they want to put the translator, directional or not I see problems.

The closing date has been set for this Thursday. Once all of the papers have been signed the station will belong to Pittsburgh Public Media. There is a chance the 1550 WZUM format will live for a few more days until they are ready to move to their program feed. I'll post the date and time for the switch.

Hey PhilZ: I have both versions of "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" on the system.
