1560 KGOW

Bigstory - I don't listen that regularly. I was basing my analysis on what I have heard. I listen to Justice on average once a week and I guess I've been lucky each time, but I have not been disappointed with him yet.

As for John & Lance joining up with him in the 10AM hour, it is not because Justice needs help. It is a contractual thing. The station moved J&L's 4th hour from 6-7AM to 10-11AM. They did not want J&L on at 6AM when the station cannot sign on until the sun comes up. It is not until mid March when they can sign on at 6AM. Right now I believe their sign on is 6:30A. J&L are contracted for 4 hours every morning. They sit in the last with Justice because Justice is contracted from 10AM-Noon. What the station should do is move J&L back to 6AM. I believe when daylight savings time returns this weekend they can sign on Monday at 6A again. Either that or move Justice from 11A-1P and move Hoffman 1-3P. Who cares what happens after Justice. It's all basically unlistenable after him anyway.

Adguy, i am having a hard time following you and many who keep saying the same things over and over again. I listen to all of the sports talk stations everyday. I have worked with many of the on air talent. What is so great about CP? He looks up his info on the computer better than the other guys? RL? He's ok, but they all do the same things What makes the guys on the game so bad? becuse they are not arrogant? that's what CP is. I can hardly stand to listen to him sometimes. Do you expect that any new talent that comes in has to fit themselves into the mold of the other guys that are already on the air? If you talking about knowledgeable guys that don't just talk down to everyone and tell you how wrong you are, Ralph Cooper is one of the best in Houston. John Harris on the game is really not bad at all either. Very knowledgeable and doesn't have to be arrogant. But these are my opinions. I could be wrong.
 
This discussion is going nowhere as usual about KGOW. Bottom line, except for morning drive - bad air talent! Also no night signal, and little revenue. KGOW still shows up with a big fat zero in the latest Houston ratings. I've been doing this business for years. In a market like Houston, 0 ratings equal not so great revenue. Not so great revenue equals bad cash flow and the inability to survive. The investors pockets can only be soooo deep and the lake is getting dry every month.

Even the 97.5 has about a .5 rating share while KBME and KILT AM all have numbers too. This is and has been a losing proposition. Even if some things changed for the better on KGOW, there would still be too many outlets of Sports Stations for the Houston market.

I just don't think that the extra hour of DST is going to make a difference. Time brokerage on 1560 is not to far away!

Unfortunately, Houston is not and has never been a very sophisticated sports market, and that results in quite a few stupid callers to the SportsTalkers spouting ridiculously inane opinions. The only people who find Pallilo arrogant are the "Rah Rah home team, everyone else sucks" crowd. CP isn't afraid to call it like it is, as opposed to telling people what they want to hear. If you spout off boneheaded nonsense on his show, he's going to call you out.
 
This is an interesting thread. KGOW has it's supporters and detractors who all have good arguements. KGOW is trying to position itself as the champion of the little (non-corporate) guys. Fine, but give us something that is an alternative beyond J & L. Sports radio serves the Male 35-54 demo and KGOW, beyond the AM show, doesn't offer that demo anything. The PM show is sophmoric, featuring deep discussions of bodily functions, the top ten women they would "do" and other fraternity mentality subjects. As for Hoffman, what were they thinking.
You don't have PPM ratings if you don't encode. Why would they make that investment when they already know it would be a waste of money. Oh, speaking of money, paycuts are coming and the layoffs have begun. KGOW was a great idea that ran up against bad timing and poor execution.
But hey, I wish them well!!

My sentiments exactly. I root for KGOW and BizRadio because they are local operations up against the corporate evil-doers. KGOW problem: No quality after morning drive. BIZRADIO problem: The inept and inexperienced owner.

Pruitt would most certainly be more entertaining than Hoffman. The real challenge could be for The Game to be the one that would finally bring Pruitt back together with Mark Stevens. Stevens, last I spoke to him a few years ago wants nothing to do with that, but a S&P show from noon to 2 or 3P would certainly add more male listeners, but they still would have that problem going against Rush and Rome. Pruitt or S&P in afternoon drive might be a better solution. As far as true local talent, they would have no competition and there's no super male gathering talent away from sports. Hannity is no Rush and true local talent ala Pruit or S&P might thrive in the absense of any good afternoon drive talent in this market. I agree with the other poster in this thread that refers to KGOW's current afternoon drive talent as amateurish and frat-like. Pruitt would be a huge upgrade in that so very important day-part.
 
How about Pruitt and Outlaw Dave? Now that would put the Game on the map and spots in the breaks.
 
They won't generate serious revenue until they encode their signal for the PPMs. At the moment I can't seeing them generating any ad agency dollars, which precludes them from national ad business.

You guys are a freaking riot!

I hear you continue to say how high schoolish the afternoon drive guys are, what do you want? Do you want them to listen to the guys you all are cuddled up with (CP, RL, MV)? They are trying to do something different. THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO DO THE SAME THING AS ALL OF THE OTHER GUYS. Is that really so hard to understand? I am not saying that is brain enhancing radio, but it is something different to listen to. Everyone can't be the same and survive. Some of these formats will have to flip. That's how it works. I do agree though that they need to encode. They need that for agency/national dollars. They are not stupid over there, it will come. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!. :mad:

The game's pm drive show is just BAD. Period.
 
I tried to listen to that station for awhile in December. After 3 or 4 days of some guy talking about his goal of defecating in every building in the Galleria area, I lost interest and turned it off. It's too bad. I hoped for a good station. Why must Houston radio be so poor? People here seem to have very low expectations for air quality and radio :(

Different is fine, but if it's not entertaining there will still be no listeners. Sean should go back to be a professional caller and John Harris should go back to being a college football expert guest. How many top 10 hottest NFL cheerleader lists can you produce?
