1560 Melbourne

Apparently 1560 now operates at night. They were coming in with a decent signal In the Florida Keys Wednesday. Also, on my trip back to Orlando Thursday night I could recieve them after dark off and on all the way back almost to Orlando. Radio Locator says they are daytime only. What kind of powewr do they operate with at night?

FWIW, I noticed that they have a PSSA (Post Sunset Authority), allowing them to operate until two hours past local sunset, rounded to the nearest quarter-hour. This month that's until 10:00, but their authorized power is only 10 watts from 8 until 9, then 8 watts until 10. I'd say if you heard them in the Keys they were running a lot more power than that.

If they are running a sports format, don't assume it was Melbourne. KGOW near Houston recently got night approval and they have a monster lobe to southern FL. Listen for an ID---if it's 1560 the Game, it's Houston.

KGOW does indeed have a monster signal (sadly wasted on SNR bird feed) and is also the most dependable US signal down into Central America. During my last 2 trips to Costa Rica, whether in San Jose or along the Pacific, KGOW came in every single night with a decent signal. The only other signal that comes close is KVNS from Brownsville, TX - which is actually steadier and which is generally alone in the frequency but which has a weaker signal. KGOW sends a lot more wattage south/southeast than KVNS does.

All other mainland US MW signals were more sporadic, fading in for a short time then gone for the rest of the night (or the week).

Are you able to hear any of the Chicago 50KWs down in Costa Rica?

No, I have yet to hear any of them that far south - and I've tried every time I've visited. In general, local stations occupy key frequencies of Chicago stations - but even farther away from the city (where the San Jose AMs don't impede) there's no Chicago to be found for the most part. Got WLS and WBBM from Puerto Rico once, but never from CR.

WARNING - SLIGHT THREAD HIJACK.....

By the way (along similar lines), I tried for the big Chicago signals from the Salt Lake area earlier this month and got:

670 - KBOI Boise, KLTT Commerce City/Denver (later at night)
720 - KDWN Las Vegas
780 - KKOH Reno (strong until Reno sunset, then weak); KAZM Sedona, AZ (rather strong every night)
890 - KDXU St. George
1000 - KOMO Seattle and splatter from local on 1010.

Not once did I pick up anything from Chicago while there, even though I know that I have gotten most of them from a mere 78 miles farther to the northeast. The Wasatch Mountains do seem to pose a barrier of sorts. I did get WHO Des Moines each night - that and KSTP were as far east as I could pull in.
