1560 The Game: A Rough Start

Tuned into 1560 this morning and could barely pick up the signal through the static at the intersection of 610 and I-10. They had some advertiser on who was jokingly asking if he got a price break because of the poor signal. So they know about it. Got into the office and put the station up on my computer. At least their streaming signal is working. However it sounds like they are broadcasting inside a tunnel. John Granato is at the helm and him and his co-hosts sound no different than KILT and KBME as to the topic, which of course is the Texans. If the topics are hardcore sports, I don't see how they (1560) survive. I'm sure am one of probably less than 100 people listening to them right now. It is sure to grow, but without promotion they don't have a prayer. Good Luck!

Yeah, I was trying to listen to them in the Copperfield, Willowbrook, and Champions area today, and they were fading in and out. Not to mention, I had to crank the volume way up to hear it. I was picking up WOAI and KTSA better than I was picking up 1560. However, what I did hear was fairly entertaining. Supposedly, the signal quality will be fixed by August 24th. However, I heard nighttime broadcasting will be on 1480, TFN. I guess they're still having issues with their nighttime pattern. I don't know why they wouldn't wait a few more days to launch the format with a quality signal? They've waited this long, what's a few more days for good quality?! ???

Crappy signal. INEXCUSABLE START. The 50kw rig has been in place for almost TWO YEARS and THEY STILL CAN'T GET IT ON THE AIR?

With the nighttime signal issues, this is a trainwreck that needs to be cleaned up QUICKLY. It won't matter how good the programming is, if the signal sucks. Basic rule of broadcasting.

And an interesting observaton today: The new KBRZ site, which is apparently running 1kw (while awaiting delivery of the permanent 5kw rig) sounds much stronger at my Cy-Fair location than KGOW. Yikes.

You're right, if it wasn't ready they should have delayed the kick-off. They've had a lot of problems out at the 50,000-watt site, including being required to run just 4,800 watts during program tests back in '05 due to "excessive radiation." When they finally got approval to run the full 50kW in the fall of 2006, it resulted in complaints of interference from two other stations. Mercifully the FCC denied those complaints and a "license to cover" for the big rig was officially granted in February of this year. But it's been on the air sporadically since then and a number of times the signal appeared to be out of parameters, slopping over into areas where it didn't belong. It's obvious they were having problems and it was the responsibility of RAFFT, and now Gow to notify the FCC and request an STA to run at variance (using low power, an alternate site, etc.). From what I can tell they didn't.

I head them say on the web stream today that they are giving their advertisers FREE ads this week because their 50,000 watts signal they promised them is not working. They also said that the 50 KW signal will be up by the end of the week. At least that is what the engineers working on the project said.

What power are they running now??

Also, all of their talent sounds like they are talking a foot away from the mic...audio is flat and muffled...they're not doing much or maybe any audio processing...they need an Aphex 230 or similar to boom and brighten the audio.

Sound quality aside, some of what I heard today is entertaining. Granato is Granato. He needs Lance at his side ASAP. I missed Richard Justice. Hoffman was a bit shakey from what I heard and the afternoon guys are pretty funny. If they get the signal and audio problems fixed and do some heavy promoting they might survive and impact the Goliath(s). I hope the advertisers got AT LEAST this week free and everything else almost free. They won't have any audience for quite a while, even if they do promote heavily.

I listened to the afternoon guys for about an hour in the Sugar Land, Mo City area and had a great signal. The processing needs work and they need to work on getting rid of the hollow sound that others have mentioned. It was not a great start but it sounded somewhat entertaining while I was listening. Some of their promos for other shows, especially the ones for Hoffman are fairly creative too.

I havent been able to liten to the radio this week. I havent done work on the streets! And my car stereo dosent pick up am stations. Nut tomorrow I will and I will listen to it to see how it works ;)

I have only 4 words for this issue. I told you so. Should've been testing the rig during the stunt. Should've been running at 50kw while Sangeet Radio was still at 1560. Now, you have a horrid start to a format that will already struggle against 3 other sports stations. KGOW sounded worse than KFNC today. That's about as bad as it gets. KGOW is being touted as the 2nd strongest signal in Houston behind KTRH once it comes on the air......if it comes on the air. Get it fixed, or Game over. Pun intended.

It sounded fair at 2:45AM on my way in. I'm not sure of the power. However, I was in southwest Houston. It was good to hear CCR's long version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."

Hi everyone, I thought I would answer email tonight and also tell you that most of the stuff you are saying about engineering is right.
That is still the old owners working on the transmitter. Not us. From what I know we are all at the studio just having fun and playing music at night building studios.
From what I know they sholud have there work done by the end of the week and then KGOW will take over.
Have a great week all and I am glad most of you like the music.
That is me playing all of that stuff wile we are working up there.
Most of that music came from the old 1230 KNUZ when i was on the air there.
I went in the production for about a 3 months and dubbed forever many records
in 1993
Later ALL
