1560 WINT off the air

Was out in Palm Bay this week and decided to turn off the Sirius and try out some east coast terrestrial radio for a while. I couldn't help but notice that ESPN 1560 WINT the 5000 watt daytimer sister station of ESPN 95.9 WSJZ was off the air. WAGL, another daytimer but at 50,000 watts was coming in out of Lancaster, SC. I looked WINT up in the FCC database and noticed that they are off the air due to the copper being stolen last week from their transmitter site. I wonder, is it worth it for Cumulus to fix up a daytimer station that nobody (at least according to the ratings) listens too? They have the same format on an FM station that has a much better signal then on 1560 (not to mention 95.9 is 24/7). IMHO they should just sell whatever salvageable equipment is there and keep the station dark.

Although ESPN sports may not be the best fit for WINT-AM since the same programming is available 24/7 on FM, I would never recommend voluntarily relinguishing any radio station license over a programming or minor technical issue. Instead, there may be another very viable format that will fit AM 1560 just fine. A radio station license, whether AM or FM, is a valuable commodity, and at the very least, if I didn't want the station any longer, I'd seek out a qualified potential buyer and sell the station. If a station is "dark" or no longer has a valid license, it cannot be sold; Hence at that point the licensee loses his or her investment.

If you saw in my FLORIDA discussion post, WINT-AM was a great compliment to WSJZ-FM. The FM is an affiliate to the Orlando Magic, Florida Gators (BB & Football) and Atlanta Braves (so expect interrupted ESPN almost daily), the AM is basically a pure ESPN feed with just a couple of brokered local Saturday morning shows somewhat "protecting" the ESPN brand in Brevard.

According to the Central Florida Radio site, WINT was knocked off the air by copper thieves. No word on how long they will be off the air.

It looks like "how long" is however long Cumulus can drag it out. Must be saving money on electricity or something :(
