1580 am Back on the Air as Mega

Was Listening to Mega 99.3 KMLE HD3 fed from Audacy's 107.9 today and noticed at the TOP they are now identifying as "Mega 99.3 & 1580. I wonder will the KAJM call letters move to 1580?? Seems just how different Radio is now, while you have a music format on AM and (while I have nothing against News) format on FM (92.3). Growing up News/Sports/Talk were always on AM. Times sure have changed. Apparently, Sierra H has acquired what was KQFN.

My thoughts exactly. I posted this over in the thread "KFNN 1510 gone silent?"

When you think about...

The Valley has quite a few AM's that are playing music:

KNAI/KOY/KBSZ/KXEG/KSUN/KAZG/KQFN

Even though we know the real purpose is to feed the FM.. it's still interesting.

Someone pointed out that I should add KPHX. I've never listened to it, so can't say if they also play music.

This is already being discussed in another thread with 1580 noted back on the air and several of us noting 1580 is simply being used to feed the translator. I'l lbet $20 the HD3 feed for 99.3 will disapepar soon. in the long run, its much cheaper to buy an am to feed the translator than it is to lease someone elses signal

I probably should use one of the more populated threads to say this but something I and others suspected would happen has happened. The 1580 frequency licensed to Tempe is now officially KAJM and the 104.3 FM frequency licensed to Camp Verde is now officially KZNY. Both of the callsigns, especially the 1580 one, reflect the current formats heard on these frequencies.

K257CD is listed as being fed by 1580 (with new call letters KAJM, as mentioned above) once again. KMLE-HD3 is still on the air with Mega. I wonder if the owners will spend that one time Xperi fee and extra equipment costs to rebroadcast on a new HD2 of one of their owned stations? It would save them money over continuing to rent KMLE-HD3.

why would they need an HD when they got the am? The only reason the HD or AM exists is to feed the translator and to put HD on a rimshot would be acostly venture and lead to frustration.

No one listens to AM for music anymore. A few may want to use HD. Not to mention, the station streams with a lousy quality streaming provider, which doesn't help either. If they want more listeners, they have to take their streaming more seriously.

youre missing the entire point/my theory.

The HD lease was probably costing them $10,000 a month, maybe more

the AM cost $150,000. all in, engineering and legal fees, and any tune ups needed... will come to about ,$200,000.. less than 2 years of the HD lease fee

The AM exists solely for feeding the translator, thats it. the stream sounds ok to me and its not the provider thats the issue, its the bitrate the station pays for .. they can fix that quickl;y

Yeah, i see theyre promoting 1580 AM, they might.. might.. get a handful of listeners off it

It shouldn't be surprising...but the ratings for Mega have tanked. Down to a 0.6 share, ranked down in the 30's. Sunny at 104.3 has plateaued at a 1.0 share. This is probably where it lives.

I didn't say they should keep KMLE-HD3, but place an HD2 on 101.1or 104.3. That would be cheaper than continuing to lease a channel, and now that they have the AM to "feed" 99.3, it would help get maybe a few over the air listeners outside the translator's limited reach.

As for their streaming provider, they use Securenet Systems (Cirrus) which is known for mediocre service, apps, etc. It's the company a ton of small stations use if they want to "brag" about being able to stream at a low cost, not for those who want quality and reliability. Every time I see a station use or switch to them, I cringe.

Sunny's a listener flop and probably was a mistake on Sierra H's part. Maybe they're betting the format will eventually bill better with half the audience they had as Mega.

I disagree. The cumes of both stations were over 130,000 (for Sunny) and 111,800 for KMLE-HD3 respectively. Those numbers aren't bad; in fact, they're better than most of the market's news/talk/sports outlets.

With regard to what is now KZNY-FM, I would be looking for it to show improvement in the Flagstaff ratings, whenever those are taken again.

Sunny's cume numbers are low compared to other music stations, even the rimshots. Mega had twice as many listeners as Sunny did when they were on 104.3, but then was moved to a translator/AM combo. People don't like the product, and the numbers show.

Don Parker thought his track record would bring success to the station. He's not starting out his consultancy on a winning note (and even some of the similar "Breeze" stations he launched at iHeart didn't catch on either).

But the bottom line is, mostly...... what does the station cost to run and what is it billing alonhg with how much of what they billed do they collect on?

Mega has three people listed for air talent.

Manic Hispanic and Jackie Morales are locally based. Morales slso pulls double duty on The Bounce. Xavier the X man is VT'ed from San Diego.

So, they do have on air labor costs.

Not sure about MH, but Jackie has been VTing her shifts for years. It's basically a part time job while she does other things.
