1580 Flips To Conservative Talk

According to DCRTV.com.

They will simulcast Smerconish out of Philly and air among others Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly, whose show was previously heard on 19 different D.C. area stations.

And, at least for the time being, using the calls WHFS. What an historical train wreck! 1580/talk/WHFS. Hard to think of three more dissimilar concepts in one place. And, sadly, the usual lineup of ne'er-do-wells...

I know DC and Philly are close but I think simulcasting the morning show is a bad idea. So much for being live and local in either market.

With the limited range of that station - especially at night, unless CBS has plans to make either Dan Snyder or Bonneville "an offer they can't refuse" and buy either 1260 or 1500, I feel the station stands a good chance of not making it. It's probably be best for 1580 to be sold, have it operate at a drastically reduced power (1kw non-directional day) and become a small community broadcaster. Should management decide to keep the station, I'd say either sublet the evening hours, or shut down the transmitter at dusk.

When I exit I-70 onto West Broad Street on my way to work at the Ohio Department of Public Safety, I'd often get a bleed of the signal from Washington as I listen to Bill Press on 1580 WVKO. ???

This is right after Bill Press does his segment "Crap You Haven't Heard." ;D

The Bill Press whose show originates from The Nation's Capital and just wrote a new book called Train Wreck.

Coincidence? I think not. :D

ANd you think a Daytime only "community" station with less promotional, engineering and staff resources would make money compared to who has it now?

Washington, DC voted 93% for Obama.
Prince Georges County, VA voted 89% for Obama.
Montgomery County, MD voted 71% for Obama.
Charles County, MD voted 62% for Obama.
Arlington City/County, VA voted 72% for Obama.
Fairfax County, VA voted 60% for Obama.
Prince William County, VA voted 55% for Obama.
and Loudoun County, VA voted 52% for Obama.

And CBS thinks that this market wants to hear Right Wing Conservative Republican talk?

What in the hell are these guys smoking?

It doesn't necessarily need to be a for-profit operation. I'm sure that there could be other options. The thing is with the limited coverage that 1580 has now even with 50kw (there is still a bunch of snap, crackle and pop in northern PG county) and the paltry coverage that the night signal has, there are not a whole lot of options for the station. In all truthfulness I think the station is doomed unless someone can come up with something truly innovative, and I don't see this new format as the answer.

Well, WCBM and WBAL both are on the right side of the political spectrum (altho WBAL shot themselves in the foot when they cancelled Rush).

Last set of numbers I saw had CBM and BAL with about an 8-9 share, you can make lotsa money with those kind of numbers.

;D
