1590-AM South Daytona WPUL Still Dark

Heard 1590-AM Might Return to the Air after The Daytona Times took it dark over a Year Ago,they somehow managed to get an STA to return to the air by (I think it was Aug 10) but have not heard any testing going on or anything...it's unfortunate I Programmed Oldies on that Station when it was WZIP Years & Years Ago would be sad to see it deleted but it looks like time is running out.

Someone needs to do something with that station or let it go. A few years ago I had asked my consulting engineer to take a look at 1590 to determine if a power increase was possible. We had determined we could diplex on the WELE 1380 towers with 5kw-D and 1kw-N; DA-N, giving 1590 a superior day and night signal. We never pursued acquiring the station, however; hence the upgrade went no further than the planning table.

Low power and high dial position on AM - a bad combination. 5kw wouldn't even be enough, Doc. You would need some serious heat even near the water, and you would still be an unknown AM station that has been off air for an extended period. I don't think this one is coming back, and if it does it won't be for long.

Yeah we previously had a CP to go 5kw Days that lapsed somewhere around '83-'84. I'm pretty sure a lack of funding is the issue-an engineer I know was going to get it back on the air-ended up going nowhere.I was going to suggest they plug in one of Westwood One's 24/7 Music Formats into Simian and let it fly until they could sell it.The Cost would be negligible since they ran Westwood One when they went off-all the equip is there at The Daytona Times is their On Air Studio and the format is Trade...Get that baby Fired Up,Put Some Music On & Sell it. Now he's put it into a Trust Fund in his Wife's Name for No Cash Consideration and as I said the STA which gave them the Authority to operate at reduced power from MLK at The Times Building is up in August then their out $250,000.So Who Knows??????

I remember when the former WZIP had a CP for 5kw NDD from the former South Daytona/Port Orange TL. They had a nice little studio/office building at that time. I had met with Frank Canal in 1982 and he had said that WQXI in Atlanta was replacing its 5kw transmitter and the older one was for sale. He said he was thinking of buying the old WQXI transmitter for the 1590 upgrade; however, that never happened. I assume Frank and WQXI management didn't come to terms on the price.

Surprisingly, when 1590 was WELE with its transmitter/tower on beach side in the sugar sand, it had an amazing signal for a 1kw daytimer. I was told by an insider it could be heard as far away as Saint Augustine in those days.

Yeah I worked for Frank Canale and Jerry Keifer before Frank bought WZIP...It was a good little Money Maker for what it was, daytimer at the time with 2 hour Sunrise & 2 hour past sunset.I was told by the Engineer they could get the Tower Sight back in South Daytona to return to full 1kw Day/32 Nights and with the Studio Set up at the Daytona Times I'm still puzzled they have not been able to get it back on at 1kw and then try for the 5kw upgrade-which would probly allow them to get the full 250 watt FM...If it is a Money Issue or something else I've no idea...the engineer seemed really excited to get it going and then after a year or 2 of yeah we're going to do this, get it back on...dead silence.(In more ways than one) So Tick,Tock goes the clock...time is running out it's now or never.

Could be any number of reasons for the hold-up: finances; local zoning changes; tower site availability... Curious what is the current STA power, and when does the STA expire?

The letter that accompanied the grant of the STA specified that they had to resume broadcasting by February 2015. The STA was for 250W days and 32W night at a location 5.3km from the licensed site and it has an expiration date of 8-9-15. However, if they didn't get the station on the air by Feb 19, 2015, then it is a dead duck if the FCC finds out. They filed no official notice that they had resumed broadcasting. In April they filed a voluntary transfer of control to Julia T. Cherry and that has not been granted, yet.

There's a Resumption of Operations filed February 10, 2015, signed by Julia T. Cherry in the correspondence file for WPUL. Looks like it was filed immediately after the grant of the STA.

Then the question is: Are they on the air, or did they file a resumption without actually intending to broadcast?

Has WPUL resumed broadcast service at any time since it ceased its STA broadcast operations? If not, exactly how long has 1590 been silent?

To the best of my knowledge 1590 WPUL has been silent since February 18, 2014 and as of today 6/30/15 has never resumed operations.I saw the response to the STA in 2015 but they did not go back on the air.

I actually thought that was WROD; however, after WROD was sold, that ad has remained active on RadioTVDeals.com so I thought maybe it was WMFJ. I'm a little surprised to learn WSBB is for sale. WSBB is a nice little beach station with an impressive signal

What is the asking price for WSSB? I had heard that the station is VERY profitable for a graveyard AM - any land involved?

Skip Diegel is the owner/operator and a very smart fellow. He used to manage WVLG in the Villages before he bought WSBB. Within months of taking control of WSBB, it was in the black. The key: Localism, localism, localism. Skip ran a daily talk show from 11am to 1pm, 5 days a week featuring local personalities, advertisers, etc. People listen, but I'm sure it's hard work. He's probably finally ready to retire.

WSBB had been Co-Owned with WROD and were housed together at The Old Daytona Outlet/Sunshine Mall when Gore-Overgaard Owned them 1340 was MOR and 1230 was an Oldies Format when Skip bought WSBB as of the last year WSBB has had an LMA with the Owners of 1490 in DeLand and have been an AM/AM Simulcast on 1230/1490 (but WSBB has no FM Translator) WROD had Purchased the 104.7 Translator from Reach several Years Ago,104.7 was originally in Deltona. Also another side-note 1490 in DeLand used to be owned by Blackcrow & for about 5 years simulcast 1150 WNDB before being sold & going Mexican a few Years then being LMA'd to WSBB.In My Opinion WSBB would be perfect for a 60 & 70's Oldies Pop Format Given the Older Demo's of the New Smyrna/Daytona Area-there are a lot of folks in their 60's and Retirees but $500,000 I'd hope that included a Tower/Transmitter Site Lease.
