1590 WCSL, Cherryville Turning Up the Power?

I just read that WCSL, Cherryville(1590) has applied to increase from 1kw to 10kw days, remaining non-directional. This apparently can be done(and remain non-directional) since 1600 WGIV is no longer around. But this begs the thought...I thought WGIV had to abandon its old frequency after it moved to the expanded band, which it has done with 1660 WFNZ. However, this like other "expanded-band" moves has been done to clean up the clutter on the AM band. Nothing against WCSL, but doesn't this power boost help in re-cluttering the band? This seems like cleaning a room by cramming everything in the closet, then having the closet door fall off with the clutter coming back into the room.

Just axin'...

Eric...WGIV on 1600 nighttime interference is how the FCC decided which stations got expanded band channels. Daytime did not play a role. Those stations which received the most interference and those which created the most interference were given expanded band. Of course, the FCC didn't create any rules that prevented anyone from filing for 1600 nighttime in the Charlotte area. They had 4 towers with 1000 watts at night. Odds are it would take more towers now to get 1000 watts plus the FCC has gotten pretty strict about the nighttime interference free contour of a full time AM must cover the entire corporate limits of the city of license. That would prevent Charlotte from being the city of license but someone might take a smaller incorporated community near by and do it.

As someone who loves AM radio I think to put a new AM station on in Charlotte is a waste of money, real estate, and electricity. Most people stopped listening to AM 20 years ago except for WBT.

If you put on a new AM station better be willing to run it for 10 years with no ratings.

No ratings, though, doesn't mean no revenue. Stations with the highest profit margin by percentage are also some of the stations with the lowest ratings.

Ten years with no ratings? No way. Key is be willing to promote it - I mean seriosly promote it - and stick with it! Find the underserved market - oldies is one - and superserve it! But without the marketing money, don't bother!

'Tis true that WCSL is gonna up the power. It'll be a smoker in Gaston County and will likely do pretty well in Northwest Clt, but remember that top of banders drop off VERY quickly as you travel away from the transmitter site. Given the choice, I'd much rather have 500 watts at 550 khz than 10 kw at 1600
