1590 WKTP

Ive noticed lately the signal is better than it was a while back. I did read on here maybe a couple years ago, 1590 was interfering with a commercial two way repeater and the 1590 power was reduced to alleviate the problem. Must have been solved lately. The signal into Greeneville is much stronger much like it was in the WJSO heyday in the 70's. I thought surely it could be better into the next county when Jonesboro is only 20 or so miles away if the 1590 tower is still in the same location. Just wondering. I like my oldies better than todays crap.

For the past few nights, I've noticed this station coming in quite clearly here in Central KY. Until now, I've NEVER heard this station here. Something has definitely changed on 1590.....

A quick look at the FCC applications for WKTP:

it appears they "claim" they are having issues with their 4 tower directional system. They have an STA to use tower 2 at 1250 watts daytime. However there is an application for to convert to a class D non directional 1800 day 23 watts at night:

I suspect they "economizing" their AM (Four tower 5 KW) because they have a FM repeater:

This seems to be a trend, stations that are going from class B to Class D to save on the light bill and directional array costs if the have a FM translator.

When I worked at WABV 1590 in Abbeville, SC (between Anderson & Greenwood) and would sign off at sunset, sometimes WKTP would come blaring in on the boombox in my on air studio.

Their 5KW 4 tower directional night power was beamed right at me ;)

Doesn't matter anymore. They changed the format on all the AM's to ESPN Radio cause another AM dropped it for another sports network. Brilliant, now there is no oldies in the market. Anything close is in Morristown on 1150 and 105.7. That FM only covers Morristown. Their format is mostly 70's and some 80's which is fine. But the Tri is still without an oldies as of now and HV is too cheap to stream on the net.

The Tri-Cities market has several Country Oldies stations, 870, 1050, 1240, 1320, 1340, 1420. You'd think one of them would switch to conventional Oldies now that 1400, 1490 and 1590 are all ESPN affiliates.

The problem is that none of them have decent night time signals, and half those stations are so behind the times they probably won't change their format because they're concerned about the cost of buying new records.

This station always had a good signal and such good music.
