1600 history and now

Hey Guys:

I found the basic history of 1600 from the DCRTV site but I can't find this info.

Would anybody know when did WINX 1600 go from Spanish AC to Spanish Talk "Radio Unica"?

And as of 2011 1600 is WLXE playing Spanish music. Would anybody know what kind of Spanish music format it is and when did it change from Korean?

Thanks

T.J.

I used to work at WINX as did 75% of this board. I'm not too sure on the dates of the spanish formats. If you want a real challenge, pinpoint the exact hours and exact days of the week that they altered the format when they were WINX.

I remember working at the transmitter at night in that little studio with the RCA ribbon mic. I remember when a garbage truck ran over one of the tower guide wires. The tower buckled into an "S" shape. The station was forced to broadcast 300 watts omni-directional at night instead of the 500 watts directional. We used to do live remotes at the Montgomery County Fair but we'd have to wrap up the broadcast at the 8pm pattern change. Thanks to the reduced omni-directional power, we were able to pick up the station at the fairgrounds after sunset. I think for that one year they extended the live remotes to 9pm.

Here's one from the August 27th, 1955 Billboard Magazine, "Pierre Eaton promoted to Station Manager at WINX and will continue to handle his "Rock and Roll Party."

Re: 1600 history and now WITH 1230 QUESTION

Hey Guys:

A little off the topic but would anybody know what then exact date was when WITH 1230 went SRN-Talk from simulcasting WAVA-FM?
I have been going nuts trying to find this info even looking at back issues of the Baltimore Sun and I can't find this anywhere.

Thanks

T.J.

If you subscribe to DCRTV.com, you can get access to all the extra stuff. There's actually a page that gives the evolution of formats for every frequency in Baltimore and Washington. I can't remember if it gets date specific, but there's a wealth of information in there including radio station tribute pages.

Hey Steve:

I have subscribed to DCRTV.com and the info is not on there. That is why I asked the question on the board hoping someone would know. It is a great site!!

Have you tried going to the library and checking out old newspapers and magazines? Have you tried contacting some of Washington's radio legends like Ed Walker, Bob Duckman or even Willard Scott? I found this site for the Metropolitan Washington Old Time Radio Club: http://www.mwotrc.com/index.html
The site deals with the golden age of radio like Jack Benny. But perhaps there may be people associated with the site who could help you or point you in the right direction.

Here are some more sites for the Radio And Television Museum in Bowie:
http://radiohistory.org/

But this page from amandfmmorningside.com may help you fill in the blanks:
http://www.amandfmmorningside.com/wpgc_playlist_table.html

It's the "Top Ten" playlists printed weekly in the Washington Star. He has quite a few printed from 1958 to 1974. I'm looking at 10/5/58 and listed are the top ten songs for WARL (eventually WAVA-AM), WMAL, WOL, WPGC, WDON, WUST, WWDC and WPIK. The most interesting part of this week in radio history was WPGC's top ten for the week including Tommy Dorsey's "Tea For Two Cha Cha" and Cozy Cole's "Topsy II". But they were still playing some rock numbers by Big Bopper, The Everly Brothers and Dion & the Belmonts.
