1660 WBCN

Not going to work. Good luck CBS with that one. The signal is not good enough to beat WBT. They should use 610 for news and 1660 for news IMHO. If it is Air One or a liberal format it definitely won't work. It looks like even the morning show will be syndicated! I don't think so guys. Someone is wasting they're time and money.

I don't think the brass at CBS is so naive to think that the station is likely to BEAT WBT. It's clearly a flanker attack that they hope will bring WBT down a rating point or two in demo and further strengthen the CBS cluster's position in the market.

That would result in more dollars shifting from Greater Media's pockets into CBS's. Duplicating (simulcasting) the Sports format on both of the CBS AM's was not likely to accomplish that goal since there are only so many sports fans available in the market and most were tuning into 610 AM.

In effect, they were wasting a signal (?) and spending a fair chunk of change for electricity to keep a format on the air that was not adding any money to the cluster's coffers.

What's with the copyright date in lower right corner--since when is 9 "VIIII" in Roman numerals? 9 is IX...And the links didn't work for me, but I wonder what if it were conservative talk: it would be kind of weird to have those call letters, associated for 41 years with alternative rock in Boston, on a conservative talk station (I know, most people in Charlotte might not be aware of that fact but I am).

It definitely won't work because a lot of people probably don't have radios that go up to 1700 and they don't have a compelling reason to get one.

I have several radios that claim to go up to 1700 but I've never heard this station, so I have my doubts. I pick up WFNZ just fine. But I don't care about sports.

One less Sports station would be fine with me since I don't listen to sports either. If 1660 WBCN changes to talk it won't make much difference. Being on 1660 does limit the audience and WBT has something CBS will never spring for, a news department.

I know lots of people who listen to WBT, not for the talk shows but for local news. If you're going to go after "The Big 1110" you can't just stick some syndicated shows on the air.

According to the Headlines here it's all true WBCN 1660 to go conservative talk September 14th.

Once again I stand by what I said, they'll need a good local news department to do anything against WBT, and some local talk talent to speak about the local issues. I predict maybe a 1 share, if they are lucky.

Looks like a good lineup. Personally, I would definitely listen to Hannity over Tara any day. Jason Lewis had excellent numbers when he was at WBT and is one intelligent talker.

With a bit of marketing and localizing news, weather and traffic I’ll predict a 1.5 share in about a year.

Great, another right wing hate-talk station for Charlotte. I'm sure it will do a lot to enhance the community. Shame on CBS for airing such drivel, and the the same to WCNC-TV for agreeing to provide news. But why should I care, I can only barely hear 1660 (with good radios) here in Fort Mill, 2 miles from the CLT city limits.

Wow. The old fans of progressive WBCN Boston must be reeling to hear what those letters will be representing down here.

That said, Charlotte should have a 2nd choice to WBT, and CBS is probably the best poised to do that, unlike WTLT, WZRH and WDYT in the past. More power to them. An Air America presence in the QC would be nice as well, but that's along shot these days for sure.

There was a time when CBS would do their own local news and do it better than anyone. That's part of how a reputation of a leader is made not by carrying news that is seen on TV.

I wonder if WBT will pull the CBS radio network? They could go back to ABC News.

WBT could get any of these shows if they wanted them. I remember when they took Larry King away from WSOC-AM. It cost me the overnight show at WBT. Not to mention their on again off again relationship with Neil Bortz.

Bring it on. More right talkers is great! [EDIT]....truthfully, it would be nice to see some uplifting talk. I don't mean bible thumpers when I say uplifting, I mean stuff like Dave Ramsey and the like. I will not listen to this new station and will continue to listen to WBT. Tara is pretty annoying though, I tune her out every day. I may have to check out Lewis. Air One would certainly fail. It has almost everywhere else.

CBS did the same thing in DC when they gave the former WPGC-AM the WHFS calls. WHFS-FM was the legendary progressive rock station for DC and Baltimore which was blown up to become a spanish language station. WPGC was a heritage top 40 station (in the 60s-80s) which made things all the worse and was 50,000 watts day/250 nights on 1580. The new WHFS-AM, which features many of the same right wing characters 1660 will, has gathered virtually no ratings. You'd think CBS would learn...

I'm not real sure about that. Remember when WBT lost Paul Harvey to an FM station, just because ABC wanted his show on an FM Station in the market. I beleive that is what made WBT drop ABC and go back to CBS. I suspect that when they got Larry King, it was because the network wanted that nighttime Maine to Miami coverage. They got the entire east coast except for WNC by getting one station.

I don't know the story behind that. My thought was NBC made them a better deal or something. What FM got Paul Harvey? was it 96.9? If they did he sure wasn't there very long.

I knopw WNMX had him prior to their chimpanzee experiment in 1997. That seems to be when they dropped him. Someone told me that they were able to reduce their ABC newscasts from five minutes to three, or three minus commercials.

WBCN came in the GSO loud and strong Sunday am. Today not so strong. What a waste for CBS - ESPN now and then hate radio.

These stations above 1600 are supposed to be stronger than other AM stations. At night with 1000 watts required for everyone, I could pick up a station from Iowa. That's as high as my oldest radio would go.
