Political Hate Talk seems to be very popular right now...unfortunately. It doesn't seem to matter what the topic is or who say it. Somehow it gets made into a political argument.

There are people on the air who get listeners all worked up just for the sake of ratings, this has been going on for years. Now that's not good. If they stuck to the issues and didn't get emotional or insulting few would listen.
 
Why do I have the feeling this is more about parking the calls than actually making a run at WBT .. if they were serious about trying to wrest the talk auidence away they would have to put it on FM ... and, just running TV news rebroadcasts and stuff "off the bird" won't cut it ... Charlotte's too "World Class" for that aren't they ?
 
Good weekday lineup, but i agree that they need a couple of local shows to balance things, but at least there are some talkers on here that Charlotte
didn't get before like Glenn Beck, Micheal Smerconish, Laura Ingraham, and Jason Lewis, who was once at WBT, but unseating them will be tough, and
being at 1660 is a slight disadvantage, but more radios are now equipped to pick them up, especially in vehicles, in addition, being on a "HD" FM station
may help them, especially at night when WBCN will only be heard within the city limits, but i agree they would have been better off on FM, that would
have made things more competitive.

Where did this come from? These new stations can be heard all over the country in the absence of interference. So where is the other 1660 that will cause this?
 
After listening to 1660 in the car going to and from work today I just had to check out America's Left, since I had never listened before. The host was rather laid back but some of the callers were just as nutty as some of the their counterparts on the conservative talk stations. The good thing is now I at least feel a bit more balanced. :)

There two pheonomena that affect AM reception... ground wave and sky wave. When you're talking local area reception you're talkinga bout ground wave which depends on three main factors... power, directionality of the signal, and ground conductivity. WBCN powers back from 10kw day to 1kw at night. Add that to Charlotte's nororiously lousy ground conductivity and you have a signal that will peter out around the city limits signs. However, due to skywave you may very well be able to pick up the signal hundreds of miles away at night. I'm wondering why 1660 simulcast with 610 in the past. As near as I can figure, 1660 doesn't really fill in any coverage holes, day or night. The only plausible explanation was that it didn't cost anything (other than what it cost to run the transmitter).
 
Step 1: Turn that syndicated "America's Morning News" into CHARLOTTE'S Morning News

Step 2: Hannity is already aired on WRHI, so bring back Jeff Katz as another old WBT persona for the 3 to 6 slot.

Step: Is 1660 signal really the best?
 
So which of the CBS FM stations are you willing to throw under the bus to put on this talk noise. All of them do well or at least act as a foil for Clear Channel. WPEG, WBAV, WSOC-FM, WNKS and WKQC. To put talk on one of these FM's would be a very dumb move!

So if they were serious about talk they would have kept sports on 1660 and put the talk on 610?

1660 comes in much better for me than 610. I live near Carowinds. I use to tune to 1660 at night because I would loose 610 all together after sunset (or it was unlistenable). I agree, ditch the syndicated morning show for something local. This station will fail will without more localism. I was driving home from around 10pm about 2 weeks ago after Charlotte's election. WBT had live wall to wall coverage, WBCN had Fox news at the top of the hour and no local news from WCNC at all. I was less than impressed.
 
And the place to go against them is the 3-6 pm slot. Tera Servatius is vulnerable, and Sean Hannity IS hate radio. Really don't consider anyone at BT hate radio.
 
I'm wondering why AM 1660 isn't streaming, like the rest of CBS' radio stations. I'm curious to hear their imaging and presentation.
