I thought that WVON was going to take over WJJG AM-1530?
because I heard that WVON was playing most of their shows on 1530!
Why would those no good "!@#$%^&*"take over WRLL for?
Joe Gentile kept on saying that he was going to sell out his station to WVON,

WVON, Chicago's legendary African-American talk station, is expanding to 24-hour broadcasting, boosting its signal power and moving up the dial to a new frequency.
Effective Sept. 18, Chicago-based Midway Broadcasting will transfer WVON's format, talk show hosts and call letters from their longtime spot on the dial at 1450 AM to 1690 AM.

Joe Gentile's wishes notwithstanding, I'm unclear why the Spann family would seriously entertain any idea about moving to the 1530 facility. True, they'd pick up a few hours of afternoon airtime, but their sign-on would be delayed in cold weather months.
There'd be no appreciable improvement in the signal....if anything, coverage would be degraded in many of the areas where WVON's listeners reside. Much as I'll personally miss WRLL, this appears to be a great move. More daytime coverage for WVON, and with 1690 sharing its xmtr site with WGCI-AM, probably also a better nightime signal in those areas where it matters most when they "power down" at night.

Interesting... so it wasn't "La Preciosa" Spanish Oldies as was predicted by David Eduardo.

Since the time that Clear thought about doing that, their Preciosa stations in places like san Diego, Dallas, San Diego, Fresno, etc., have been severely knocked off (Dallas off by more than 50%) and they may have decided that that format is not as good as they thought it was.

Well, I had been waiting to comment on this for the entire time this deal was in play, (I have been in the loop on this deal since day one) I kept reading this board and laughing, because everyone was positive that it was going to be some form of spanish, like one of the CC spanish formats. Dave to my knowledge there was never anything in Inside radio about WRLL and a change to Spanish. Not sure what verison of Inside Radio you get?? Another confirmation that the internet info boards are a great place to spread gossip and info about this business with very little fact.

I know that car radios are up to speed but a lot of radios in the homes do not have the 1690 frequency believe
it or not. That may not seem like a big deal but maybe that's why Real Oldies did not fare as well as they
would have liked.
And I have listened to Cliff Kelley's show for years and there definitely is a reverse racism tone to his show. Just my
opinion.

From my limited experiences listening to WVON, I would not describe their programming as racist.
What does come through repeatedly, however, is frustration and anger felt (rightly or wrongly) by the minority community they serve. Its a perspective most of us non-minorities are unfamilliar with, and thus we might be mistaken in how it comes across to us.
As for having a "superior attitude", IMHO that typically goes with the territory for talk show hosts (and callers/guests who suck up to them).

How much power will WVON have when they boost their signal? I hope the signal can be heard clearly here in West Allis, Wis., and throughout Milwaukee.

I couldn't get it in West Allis during the day when I tried. I was able to get it a little during the early evening.
1690 barely makes it past Kenosha in the day and doesn't go anywhere at night.

i have radios dating back to the 1950s. i have a zenith tabletop it even goes to 1640. other than that one and a few transistors all my radios go up to 1690. even my 1981 soundesighn boombox goes up to 1700 even though the dial officially stops at 1600. so how old are these radios that dont go to 1710? from the mid 80s till now i havent seen one that doesnt.

I've heard WRLL very clearly in Central Pennsylvania, drowning out a station at the same number in Lexington Park, Maryland. When you're within a certain distance of a station at night you'll get a dead zone, move closer and the signal comes in, move away, and it comes back. I've noticed this zone is about 150 miles from an x-band station and lasts about 25 miles or so and after that point the station comes back. In some cases the zone is a little closer to the actual transmitter
The "dead zone" at night is dependent upon where the groundwave signal ends. The zone extends farther away from the xmtr until the point where the full skywave kicks in. In most cases, this will generally be 150-200 miles.
WRLL usually puts a fairly decent skywave signal into most of Wisconsin at night....except the Southeast. Where I live, in the far Northwest suburbs of Chicago, the WRLL nighttime signal is inaudible....the channel usually dominated by Air America from Atlanta.
