1710 am New Jersey

Hello:

As my name suggests, I'm new to this forum but I have lurked around for a few months. I don't own any special radio recievers and over the years I usually have just used a regular home stereo or portable radio to catch distant AM signals.

I live in Ontario, Canada and last Saturday night on my Sony walkman SRF59, I picked up a station airing COVID-19 information on a loop. At first I thought it was 1700AM in Ramapo, NY but I then heard 1710 WQFG689 as the station ID.

Wow! I realize that it's essentially a clear channel, but to get it on just a regular radio walkman over 500 miles away seems like a feat. Has anyone else picked up this station from afar.

First of all welcome to the board. Glad to have you! Regarding this station I've haven't heard it yet, but stations on the high end of the band really get out at night with skywave. In the 90s when they first opened up the high end of the AM band, I heard KDIA in California in the Chicago area. It was the only station on the frequency at the time and only running 1KW. I was surprised to get it so well, but as in your case it was on a clear channel at the time.

1710 is only 90 kHz from the start of the 160-meter amateur band, and operators there routinely chat cross-continent every night. The expanded-band frequencies are more HF than MW.

its running 100 watts.... and 100 watts on a clear frequency like that heard 500 miles away isnt terribly surprising

I see now they recently got bumped to 100 watts. Makes more sense given how 530 CIAO/CHLO goes out a long way with 250 watts at night.

Nothing like an empty frequency.

From Ohio "back in the day" I got 250 watt KIKI 830 from Hawaii and the AFRTS 50 watter from Ramey AFB, PR. My own HCRM1 in Quito with 1 kw on 805 got reports from most of the world including all continents (even the Argentine base in Antarctica).

I've heard CIAO (CHLO) 1300 and some miles away in Wyoming at night a few times.

1710

The New Jersey 1710 really gets out, it did fairly well even before the boost to 100 watts.n There's a few stations like that on 1710. One in MA, another in PA. A few others, including the occasional pirate.

Welcome Saul and a belated welcome to thewishguy. You're among friends here, so don't be shy about posting.

I'll give 1710 a try at my location here in the Chicago area. My best radio....a GE Superadio II, doesn't go up that high. It's 37 years old, so it was bult before the band expanded. But I've got a couple of other portables that may be able to bring it in.
