19 Action News

Anyone noticed since Romona Robinson joined, WOIO has seemed to finally starting to tone down the tabloid bent? (this judging from what I have seen from YT clips recently) From what I heard from a WDOK interview with Romona, she said that 19 management wants to go into a more "mainstream" direction. Good to see them finally do that.

You have to wonder if a condition of bringing Romona in was to tone down the sensationalism.

Robinson's prim and proper style would definitely not mesh with the usual 19 Action News M.O.

Also remember, 19's gonna get "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" in the fall, so perhaps they're gearing up for what's sure to be a huge ratings windfall, so they want to be on their best behavior.

Any station employing Ed Gallek will lack credibility.

Ed was the "Crime Stoppers" guy on WEWS before going "down the dial", and he was pretty good over there.

Romona has brought a lot of good fortunes to WOIO. The station has been running promos saying they're number one at 11. My guess is, in the long run, the station will become a success.

"Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" will definitely be a huge boost to the station as well. That will mean stronger lead-ins for the CBS primetime lineup, a bigger boost for the newscasts, and possibly better syndication programming down the road, even for WUAB too.

WOIO still has some of its previous bent, but they are slowly losing it. Toning it down and even dumping Sharon Reed has been helping the station. I'm sure Lynna Lai would've been a good fit with the changes (she's now over at Romona's old home - WKYC), but the station needed to make sure it was able to afford Romona. Speaking of Sharon, I do hope she lands a new gig somewhere.

Maybe, and this is just maybe, 19 Action News will revert back to CBS 19 News in time for the new shows. Ditching the "Action News" name can help further distance themselves more and more from the tabloid format.

Could it be possible that NewsChannel 5 will now go into where 19 Action News has been? Channel 3 News and Fox 8 News don't seem like they're both going to lose their powerhouse status, so it seems 19 is likely to replace 5 as one of the big three news stations in Cleveland. Not to mention 5 has lost or is losing a lot of key programs, along with a news product that is not as strong as it used to be years ago.

Channel 5 is already "Action News" when it comes to weather. Mark Johnson gets himself all worked up over drizzle in the summer and flurries in the winter.

He's one of the few to remain over at 5 for years, while a lot of faces came and went. The station has not been the same since "Dr. Phil" arrived on 3 and 19 launched "Action News". Too many changes has given them a lot of instability.

As a result, 3, 8 and even 19 has had more success in different time slots than 5, despite some victories they've had. Numerous comings and goings have confused and even angered viewers. Hopefully, things are more settled over at E. 30th and Euclid.

Speaking of which, sweeps starts tomorrow. Who do you think will come out on top?
