1957-58 Westinghouse Logos

In collecting TV listings to use here and in my blog, I found something I thought was interesting..While Westinghouse used the same logo font for all its TV stations in the 1960's (Some refer to it as "Anklepants")..It wasnt the first time they did...In about 1957 KDKA Pittsburgh, KYW Cleveland, and WBZ Boston did as well..Examples are found in my latest blog post, along with One day schedules for each of the stations to compare..

Neat stuff, Tim!

And my usual ex-Westinghouse employee comment: the "Anklepants" font is a decent (but far from perfect) copy of the Westinghouse font, which never had a name in my experience there. (Certainly not "Anklepants," in any case...)

That's some great stuff, thanks for that!

I hate to go off-topic, but, the "you tube" links for the 1954 ABC logos were great to see. Also, look at the other offerings in that same link from the 50's-60's, CBS, NBC "Kinephoto", Du Mont. WOW!

Maybe is should be a new thread.

According to Wikipedia, "Anklepants" refers to the logo Westinghouse used later - starting in 1963. I remember this both as the font for KFWB News 98 radio in Los Angeles, and KPIX-5 TV in San Francisco.

KPIX has been owned by Viacom/CBS for a number of years now, but still uses the Westinghouse-style "5" in its "CBS5" logo. - http://cbs5.com/

KFWB is also owned now by CBS, and continued to use that font until a few years ago, when they changed their branding from "News 98" to "News 980."

Interesting that this has come up, because I saw the same font used recently for the outdoor sign on a church -of all things. I had never seen that font used outside of a Westinghouse broadcast station before.

The true Westinghouse font was proprietary to the company. That's why it never showed up anywhere else. The Wikipedia page correctly notes that Ray Larabie's "Anklepants" font "closely, but not accurately" mimics the Group W font. (The same could be said of former Group W station WOWO in Fort Wayne, which kept its Group W-era logo after its sale in 1982. Under its current ownership, the words "NEWS TALK 1190" were added to the logo, in a font that didn't quite correctly match the original Group W.)

Since Ray released Anklepants, probably six or seven years ago, I've seen it show up from time to time in various places. The logo of the movie "Sahara" was in Anklepants. There's a local car dealer up my way using the font in its TV commercials, too.

It may be spongebob, but my radar is picking up Diver Dan, Miss Minerva, Swordfish and the gang.

"Anklepants" is almost identical to the Westinghouse font, but the number 5 is all wrong. The groove in the 5 is not in the same place as in the old KPIX logo, which makes it look nothing like the KPIX "5".

Jeez - picky, picky, picky; Gibby 88. I hate to get into an argument about a logo, but...the company I work for has a mail push cart down in the garage with a "Beat the Back Up - KPIX 5" bumper sticker on it. That was an ad campaign that KPIX ran in the 80s, so it's an old Westinghouse era logo. I actually took the time to go down and look at it just now...I guess that makes me a real media nerd, huh?

While it is not totally identical, it is almost the same. The groove is the same, but the "5" is a little wider than the current version, and has a slight italics-like tilt to it, unlike the current totally vertical version. But to say it looks "nothing like" the Westinghouse era 5 is just totally wrong.

Back to Wikipedia, which has a paragraph on KPIX's branding, noting that KPIX was one of the few former Westinghouse stations to hold onto their old logo after the merger with CBS. It also notes that KPIX resisted the ubiquitous "CBS5" branding for a number of years.

..considering the economic blow that Westinghouse dealt to Pittsburgh when they
became CBS and bolted for the Big Apple....."Anklepants" is just too ironic! :D

I'm not talking about the current KPIX logo, that is a modernized version of the original. I was referring to the 5 in Ray Larabie's font.

OK - sorry...the whole thread had gotten off the subject of those original Westinghouse logos that the first posted supplied the link to - I think because somebody mentioned the "anklepants" font which is actually similar to the Westinghouse logos from the 60s and onward. So I assumed mistakenly that's what you were referring to.
