I just ran across this and thought I would post it in case anyone should find it of interest or worthy of comment.

The following is the list of Tennessee. FM stations in the Summer, 1958, North American Radio TV Station Listings, by Vane A. Jones.

WDOD-FM 96.5 Chattanooga
WGRV-FM 94.9 Greeneville
WTJS-FM 104.1 Jackson
WJHL-FM 100.7 Johnson City

WKCS 91.1 Knoxville

WMCF 99.7 Memphis

Interesting list of FM Pioneers. Wonder if any of these were making profits without relying on SCA revenue save for non com stations? Do know FM sets were uncommon in the area then.
 
Speaking just of the three Knox FM's, two of them were then and still are today associated with public schools. WBIR was part of a TV station. They later wound up with 103.5 and sold to Stoner in the late 70's.
