1968 Dave Michaels fired from WOXR ( read )

Yeah. You're right. He was, by today's standards...a puker.

But, if I had to list the number of Dayton jocks of that particular period of time who were "pukers", it would be a pretty large list. (Shall we mention "Sean McKay", who couldn't start a break without saying "W-T-U-E, Most Music Radio, I'm Sean McKay...")

The times were different...and radio was different then. You shouldn't attempt to apply today's standards to jocks from almost 40 years ago.

Dave garnered some pretty good numbers on WTUE. WTUE was far more of a "rock" station then than WING was at that time, which was how they made their mark and began to move the "rock and roll" audience toward FM in Dayton.

Those of us who were within earshot of WTUE, "The Rock Of Dayton", were fortunate. We had great Top 40 radio on FM and in stereo to boot. Not many markets were that blessed in 1971. It was a sad day around 1975 when their on-air morale started fading fast...it was like the jocks no longer cared (they must have known what was coming). Next thing I knew, T-105 had taken over & the excellence that was the Rock Of Dayton was in the past. For all who participated in those days at WTUE (yes, that includes you Jason "Baby" Roberts), thanks for the great radio...it lives on in my memories today.

Actually, WTUE had a predecessor in WONE-FM on the same frequency. It was largely automated, but PD Bill Struck did afternoons live (1970). The automation did the same intro over the same song for weeks at a time. I still remember "That Was 3 Dog Night with Mama Told Me Not To Come...I Wonder Why He Came?"...that one played every few hours for a month or more. Bill's vision eventually became WTUE (get it W-ONE (1) became W-TUE (2) and the automation system was kicked to the curb. Bill retired from a Denver station in the last year or two.

I'm confused ? Is Jason Roberts and Jason Baby Roberts the same person ?
Who is Mark Elliott ?
Signed: Confused
Jason Roberts and Jason "Baby" Roberts were two air name variations of the same person.

The "original" Jason Roberts is today known as Mark Elliott who is a PD in Indiana as of now. You had also heard him under the new name for a number of years at the old WDJX (now WXEG).

Years after he left town, I adopted the name (with his blessing, I might add) and used it from 1986 until 2004.

Thanks for the love. Bob and Jason. Here's the story behind the name:

When I started all nights at WIZE, Steve Joos insisted I use a "radio name". "What's your mother's maiden name, kid?" Elliott. "Okay, from now on, you're Mark Elliott" My grandma liked that but my dad didn't.

About 8 months later I get the interview at WTUE to do all nights in a split shift with Bwanna Johnny. Bill Struck calls me a week later to tell me I got the job. "One thing, though." Bill says on the phone. "At WTUE you will be known as Jason Roberts. We already bought a jingle and whoever got the job that would have been the name." For the six months I worked there (yes, it did seem like a lifetime) I tried to make sure I answered to Jason (not easy). I added the "Baby" because I was young and stupid.

Fast forward what seems like a hundred years. I'm working at WKHQ/WLXT in Petoskey. Doing mornings on Q as Mark Elliott and afternoons on Lite as... Jason Roberts (VT of course.) Only problem is, I couldn't say Jason with a straight face and finally gave it up, and just called myself Mark on the AC.

Two other points - Dave Michaels was a great jock, great teacher and the most shy human being I ever met in radio. And I was the biggest puker on the staff.

wasn't the original mark elliott a boss jock in los angeles?

I've known Mark since he was at WDJX...no, not the one in Louisville...the one in Dayton. So we've been friends a long time...

I'm aware of the other Mark Elliott, too...I know he's been very successful, but don't know a lot about his background...

The "other" Mark Elliot was known as Ed Mitchell on CKLW, Mark Elliot on KHJ and as a voiceover artist for Disney since 1983.

He's the real deal (Mark Elliot VO Artist). Turns out that he was doing middays at KHJ in the early 70's. Bill Drake, PD and consultant to stations across America, liked that name so much he started naming all his midday jocks around the country Mark Elliot. I remember one of my fellow students at Wittenberg, coming back from Louisville, wondering why I would quit the gig at WAKY and come back to school. Alas, it wasn't me.
