1970's Monster FM

I don't remember the frequency or calletters or even format but I remember an ad for a radio station in San Francisco called "Monster FM". It was somewhere between 1977-79.

KCBS-FM? Hmmm. I am not sure. Probably. Maybe this was after the frequency swap of 1977, when CBS gained a stronger signal, Perhaps? Maybe the "Monster" moniker mean't its signal?

Monster 97 FM was a Disco brand that was automated. John Mack worked for KCBS-FM in 1980 when it became a sort of Pop-Rock Hybrid.

The Monster FM thing was a fiasco. The station advertised on TV with a cartoon monster stomping around and looming over the San Francisco skyline - but there was no hint in the commercial about the format.

And by the way, there is the well known Irish last name "Flanagan," but there is no Irish name "MacFlanagan" or "McFlanagan" that I'm aware of. The man's name is John Mack Flanagan (first, middle, last).

JMF was on KCBS-FM for quite awhile, and I believe he stayed when the station became KRQR.

When I watched the commercial back in the days, I was wondering what the format was since there was no mention of it. Of all the formats of 97.3 post 1977 CBS years, I am guessing that Alice/Hot AC is the biggest winner since that format has been on 97.3 the longest?

Then 97.3 KRQR, The Rocker, would have to be a close second.
Definately! KRQR was around from 1982-95. Even though they were AOR/Active Rock most of the time, Didn't KRQR try a Classic Rock format for a year or two?

CBS-FM was Oldies, but I don't remember KRQR ever being Classic Rock.

Historical footnote: It was KRQR that simulcast the Mark and Brian morning show (originating at KLOS). M&B would occasionally service their Bay Area audience with local stunts. The most famous was the infamous 1996 "shower" with then-San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan. The stunt, and accompanying photograph of the flabby and pasty Jordan nude from the waist up - was credited by some as being the last nail in his political coffin - Willie Brown beat Jordan a few weeks later.

Yep...some genuis/consultant decided that The Rocker was old news, despite solid ratings and great demographics...Consultant also said they needed a cartoon mascot...so, a wolf suddenly appeared in the middle of the KRQR call letters on all T-shrts and Bumperstickers, as did the lame-ass "Bay's Best Rock" slogan. Ratings plummet, they restore the "Rocker"...but it's too late...listeners are long gone. Think that was right around 1990. Thru the late 80s, the Rocker was IT. Great music, great jocks and great attitude.
