1977 KIRO-TV Clip Mercer Mess

Woo looks familiar, I remember seeing someone like him back in 1980 in Centralia doing person on the street interviews after Mt St Helens for KIRO radio/tv as they drove plain white vehicles with 2 or 3 antennas on top. I was doing ash clean-up for a long defunct govt program via the USFS.

The Instant News Camera was probably a microwave link to the studio. Previous to this, they filmed all their news.

KIRO, in the 70's, was awesome for "new technology adoption". Unfortunately, they were always a #3 (for the most part). ENG (electronic news gathering) was just getting rolling in mid-70's, and KIRO was first to adopt it. The Instant News Cam was basically using the ENG cameras with a live feed instead of to-tape ... live field feeds were hardly ever done in those days (where now they will do a live feed standing in an empty front yard JUST to have a live feed). KIRO was first to buy a chopper; although I think KOMO was first to do the satellite truck. I remember being impressed by a little 2'x2' "grid" KIRO made and hung in studio so when they shot the newsroom from the right angle, it looked like it had an office fluorescent panel ceiling. Lots of innovation there....just too bad they have NEVER let go of the "eyewitness" franchise because that has always been about making local news feel like it's coming from "the Enquirer". Seattle, I think, has always been a little too "hip" for it...which is why the ongoing #3.

To their credit, KING's approach has always been "it's about the CONTENT"...and the ratings reflect it.
