Other than the championship game, I don't know what cable or analog TV stations carried the night tournament games.

Interesting to see the number of future Big East teams in the tournament the year before the Big East came into being...Some wouldn't join until many years later (ND, Rutgers, DePaul, and now former Big East member Virginia Tech).

I consider myself very fortunate to have been present for the Midwest Regional semi-finals and finals on March 15th and 17th at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum (now called the U. S. Bank Arena). In addition to Larry Bird of Indiana State, there were some very good basketball players in that tournament: Darrel Griffith of Louisville, Sidney Moncrief & U. S. Reed of Arkansas as well as a nice Oklahoma team.

I can't figure out how to edit a post for some reason, but I just noticed 2 other current Big East members, Louisville and Marquette. Couple other thoughts: One of Arkansas' bench warmers at that time was a guy I got to see play when he was in high school, Mike Young from Central Noble HS in Indiana. Also, was Detroit's coach at that time a guy by the name of Dick Vitale?

No. By this time (1978-79) Dick Vitale had left the University of Detroit as both Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director and was the Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons.

Aren't we forgetting Earvin "Magic" Johnson (Michigan State)?

But the 1979 NCAA Final Four thanks to Bird and Magic proved to be a wake-up call to the NBA -- the league was in trouble by the late '70s -- when they were drafted to the Celtics and Lakers respectively. And even though he was a TV reporter at the time, one other person joined them for the ride when CBS Sports hired him in 1981 (he later jumped to "Access Hollywood" and now "The Insider"): PAT O'BRIEN!!!!
